What would make IM worth paying for?

Chat programs are generally free.

Trillian recently began charging for Trillian Pro, which made many people upset.

People pay for all sorts of products and services. Is there anything that IM software could do that would be worth paying for?

Why are people upset about them charging for an advanced version of software? My regular trillian works perfectly, and it's free! :D

yea, but i doubt people would be willing to pay more than 25 bucks (even that is a lot), regardless of how great it was.

it's been awhile since i've paid for software....despite the amount of use i get from it, i would not be willing to pay for it.

coporations pay lots of money for IM capability. Mostly for security reasons tho. it wouldn't work at all if IM transmissions could be intercepted unencrypted.

As far as addons go, I still prefer email :)

IM is worth paying for. People just aren't paying for it right now because it is FREE. And they will use whatever is FREE. Well not the people who pay the $25 a month for the AOL ISP, they will pay for anything if someone pushes it enough. But everyone else will use whatever program is free. When MSN/AIM/and ICQ all go to a $3/month or whatever it is they are going to charge for it, a few new players will emerge (if there is money in actually doing it for free) that will be free and half of the free thinkers will use the new programs. The other half will pay the $3.
