If NVIDIA does buy Matrox, I for one would like to see higher quality 2D components, and exceptional 2D color configuration implemented on these $300-500 3D boards.

Won't happen, despite the articles speculation of Canadian offices, Matrox offers nothing for nVidia. It would be cheaper for nVidia to just setup an office out there than buy out a company that offers nothing substantial.

I wouldn't say that is all true. Matrox is the leader for financial firms multimonitor setups. They also do a good big of business in the medical field. I know we use them at our company for video production. They have some nice cards.

You have to look outside of the gaming world. It's not all about gaming and desktop solutions. If nVidia wants to stay on top, they have to branch outside of their normal business and try to get into other markets using their technology. While Matrox isn't big, they do dominate several markets that nVidia simply hasn't entered or had a chance to.

I like matrox, but the parhelia was a pile of crap. The best 2d output possible, with a shimmer that would appear on your desktop due to a bug in the core. 512 bit memory controller, with a complete and utter lack of z-culling. *Smacks head*

Hopefully somebody picks up their technology, though I doubt they're going anywhere as a lot of people still use their solutions, just not enthusiasts.

You've used one? I've had a couple (both a 128MB and 256MB version) running 3 monitor setups for around 3 years now, and I don't notice any sort of shimmer.

I work at Matrox and I haven't heard anything about this (officially or through the grapevine). As a sidenote, as mentionned in the article, Matrox is privately held by its founders one of which is still around and actively involved in the company, the guy is already filthy rich, so I don't really see what incentive he would have to sell.

I have no idea what's in the pipeline as far as GPUs go, but as far as I can tell the focus is on the multi-monitor market (3 or monitors/card) so I wouldn't expect Matrox to be releasing much for gamers.

I don't work in the graphics division, so I couldn't really tell you (and I signed an NDA when I got the job anyway). As far as I know, there's very little if anything in the laptop dept. apart from the DualHead2Go that Ronin mentioned.
