600MB/s is a limitation for SSDs?

Price! I am in love with my OCZ Vertex drive, and really want to shift it over to my new laptop (which will be here next week) but I don't feel like paying 250+ for a new drive. :(

The Vertex purchase was just for fun but at $260/120GB it wasn't bad (after rebate).

Next SSD purchases must have:
1. SATA 3
2. <$1.5/GB in 256GB capacity.
3. TRIM

The nice thing about SSD's is that they really promote keeping stuff on the network since it is cheap to make spindle farms and SSD's keep main systems quiet.

When the 80 gig Intel G2 hits $200 I'll buy one, which hopefully will happen by next summer. If they hit less than $2 a gig, then I might consider picking up a couple of them or a 160GB one.

I've seen some of the Jmicron drives in the used sector for under $1/GB and I'm tempted. I want the cooler operational temps over the performance.

I meant to say SATA2.. but actually SATA3 will be a limiting factor very soon. internal raid0 4 indilinx controllers and SATA3 becomes a limiting factor. The colossus is limited by SATA2 and an internal raid0 controller that is limited to ~260MB/s
A faster raid0 internal controller will be needed, but SATA3 is going to be too slow.

the 80 gb intel x-25 g2 is meant to be used as a OS boot drive
you have plenty of space to install win7 with your antivirus program and some minor apps or critical apps that you need to load up fast or use mose offen i have vista 64 installed home premium with both service packs and nod32 and my drivers all windows updates I had installed steam and tf2 and still had 42gigs left over un used then i installed l4d and stil have about 37 gig left of free space. the peformance from my WD 640 black is like night and day my system runs as smooth as butter and i do not regret the purchase even at $250 w/shipping. If your willing to spend $250 on a videocard you should consider SSD for your OS drive it is AWESOME !

Tlan, there are many of us who spent way more on video cards and as such talked ourselves into 160GB Intels. When they got to about 450 it wasn't that hard to convince me. Motherboard, processor and ram could easily match that and not come close to the performance gain.

bought an 80 gig intel yesterday. My raptor has served me well for 5 years and will still be using it for extra program space. No other part I put money into will last me that long so to me it's worth the extra investment for fast OS/program drives.

XP trim is never gonna happen. TRIM is for windows 7 and above.
Well... although they are making programs to do a trim like function with XP.

Exactly.

Which is why I won't upgrade all my PCs to an SSD. There has to be an acceptable way of fixing the performance degradation in XP, which is the dominant OS today and will probably be signifcant for the next little while as well.

Sure... Run XP in Win 7's XP mode. Was playing with it yesterday but since I've been running 64 bit Vista for so long, XP mode is lost on me other than for security reasons. Not positive, but I bet the SSD still gets TRIM support since it's a Win 7 host. Love to know if my thinking is wrong though.

Good point but that would involve getting a license for those PCs. Would rather keep the wife happy running XP as she's well acclimated to it and more than happy using it.

Perhaps I'll give in and get a vertex with the wiper tool once they get a bit cheaper.

I almost want to buy one of the Dell branded Samsung drives... just to see. If Samsung does release a TRIM firmware (instead of the current garbage collection), it could be kind of cool. Before discounts it's only $480/256GB or $1.875/GB. Waiting for a good 20% off sale might make it $1.5/GB...
