I live by this too. Live for now, not when you're 50+. :D

Me three!

Lola has already mentioned getting an Elise, but I just cannot swallow the price quite yet, but man oh man do I want to :D

What he said.

$20,000 is about the most I'd be willing to spend on a car at this point.

Same here, pretty much. I can certainly see the appeal of nice cars, but I just don't see myself ever buying a new expensive car. I'm getting along just fine with the 10 year old used one that I have :p

I would spend 50K+ on a car only after I had an income of at least 100K and also a net worth of at least 3 million.

I would not consider buying a car over $30,000 unless I was making over $100,000 per year, and have my house paid for.

Think about it. Why do you want this 50K car? To show others you can afford a 50k car, or are you looking for something fun and exciting to drive? Status symbol aside, I'd probably spend a lot less on a sports car, and go for something such as a Caterham (~£10K second hand) which still turns heads and is a total laugh to drive.

Alternatively, you could be looking for a high end BMW/Merc/Audi/Jag in which case you've just got to spend the money.

Currently, I spend roughly 30% of my annual wage on motorbikes/insurance, but I'd say I'd llive a more meagre lifestyle and spend 50% of my annual wage on the car if I was earning $100K. My answer, therefore is 100K.

at least 30k in cash, the most i'd ever want to finance would be around 20k, but ideally i'd just wait longer til i had all 50k saved if i really wanted it.

I could get a car that looks good, goes just as fast, for less money than an overpriced luxury production car.

But thats just my opinion.

I laughed very hard at the idea of making an early 90s Jap car "fast" or "stylish." Now, if you would have said "furious," I might have agreed.

In general, even at this price range, I'd speculate very few of the purchases are by enthusiasts, but rather to individuals attempting to maintain some sort of social status. As a result of that, it would probably be accurate to say that the majority of these vehicles are leased and the incomes of the actual end user is probably somewhat lower than indicated in the above posts.

I don't think people who typically buy high end luxury cars would call themselves "enthusiasts" either.

My answer is $150k-200k... but even if I made that much I think I'd still only spend in the mid 30s. I'd probably get a TL, G35 sedan, or a Chrysler Town & Country.

I'd probably have to be making $250k+ for me to rationalize it. Even making more than half that now with a reasonable mortgage and COL, I have trouble justifying a $25,000 vehicle.

proabably more than 250k and enough invested to outpace the interest on the car.

It would be more of a "how can I continue to rapidly build wealth and drive this car at the same time" decision.

I would seriously have to be earning $300k+ to even consider buying a 50k car. Even then i'd be thinking of how I could buy a 25k 2 year old used car and a 15k 2 year old wakeboarding boat and two $5k motorcycles for the price of that one 50k car.

Cars are just what I drive when weather doesn't permit me to ride a motorcycle. And in the case of motorcycles, I'd be just as happy riding a rat bike as I would a $50k custom chopper. It's not what you ride, it's that you ride.

They'd go prettyy damn fast with the right modifications, not the kinda sh1t they do to the cars in the F&F movies, thats all just looks.

Oh, no doubt, I agree in that respect. I just don't like the whole "ricer" concept. In addition, there are only a handful of Jap cars that I think look nice (Infiniti G35 and 350Z, Lexus IS350, and that Lexus LF-A if they actually make it, that's about it).
