What would I pay for a 2001 Mazda Protege ES?

I really would like to get this car but I have no idea what to offer the car dealer that is selling it.

They are listing it at $11,000 and it appears that the trade in value is about $7500.

Would asking $9000 be unreasonable? I have no idea what these are selling for! Thanks for any help.

That's good. I got mine (2001 Protege ES) a few months ago in the mid-nines. The dealership I bought it at didn't have an asking price. I just made an offer and they bounced it up a few hundred, I said "can you do any better?," they dropped $100, I asked for a free oil change, they accepted, and I signed the papers, ending up right about where I expected to be. OK, it was $88 more than where I expected to be, but that was within tolerance.

EDIT: How many miles? Mine had 18,050 (a little below average).

The one I am looking at has 31k miles. I think it's worth about $9000. It's actually being sold at a Volkswagon Dealership so at least I know the last owner wasn't too cheap.

It's a real nice car - handles like a four door miata.

Where it's being sold doesn't mean much. Many cars (especially newer, low milage ones) are just bought by dealers at auctions and hauled in. Very few are kept on the lot from trade ins.

I have a 2002 Protege ES. It is a kickass lil car. I've been so tempted with the Mazda 3 though.
