As the title states, What would I need to be doing to require 1gig of RAM??? Can anyone give me some examples, games and/or programs that will require that much memory?
Thanks!
A couple of games come to mind that work better with more ram: Battlefield 1942 and Sim City 4.
They will work with less ram, but when the action gets intense and the buildings or units start to increase, the machines slow down.
Battlefield 1942 is a memory hog. When there are people on the screen, it can take up to 550MB or RAM plus you still need about 120MB of RAM for Windows running in the background.
Also, any form of media editing requires a lot of RAM.
i have usually 500 to 700 mbs of memory in use when working on the computer. usually have photoshop, outlook, IE, matlab, homesite all open. also, matlab, cold fusion, and sql services in the background. the only time i went over 1gb was when i had premiere, photoshop, and illustrator all open with large files.
Given that memory is so inexpensive these days, I'm not sure you need much of a reason to fill out a new machine with 1 Gig. It's a bit like asking why you'd want a 120 Gb drive . . . might as well invest just a little more for future flexibility.

Really, there's no reason to *not* have 1GB of memory if you are building a new system, unless it's a super-inexpensive box. When I build my next system, I intend to have at least 2GB, and preferably 4GB, depending on how the prices of 1024MB DIMMs drop.
Like several others have mentioned, unless you're strapped for cash, there's really no reason not to get 1GB of RAM. Future programs will definitely want to use it...until then, here are a few more that do:
I do a lot of 3D animation/CAD work, so there are times when I have 2 copies of 3ds Max, AutoCAD, Photoshop, and Premiere all running at once. For most workstation users, "more RAM" is a way of life, especially when working with global illumination (ahh...the joys of finalRender).
Applications run individually:
For my own personal usage I hit about 600-850MB in PhotoShop7 at peak.
CorelDraw hits about 400MB peak.
3D StudioMax I can generally hit about 600MB peak, though my usage of 3DM is relatively light so I can easily imagine many professionals or enthusiasts hitting well over 1GB through 3DM alone.
The only game I have that's overly picky about DRAM is Sim City 4 which peaks at about 380MB on my system.
Multi-Tasking:
I'll often multi-talk with two images open in PhotoShop, along with CorelDraw, probably DreamWeaver or FrontPage. Add on ACDSee, MS Outlook, a couple browser windows... maybe MS Word or something of the like and all told my peak DRAM usage can hit about 1.2-1.3GB.
1.5GB system RAM tends to work out perfectly for me, but I an well remember a time when 512MB was optimal. Quite recently even 1GB was more then adequate.
X86-32bit's 4GB limitations are looming awfully close for some of us, and most Operating Systems arent quite as efficient when utilizing more then 2GB of RAM.
PAE is of course a pathetic at best way of getting around the 4GB barrier.
Thankfully I should have at least another 2yrs at minimum before I'll need to seriously consider X86-64, or other means of utilizing more then 4GB of DRAM in a Windows X86 environment.
