you can have bad ram that doesn't really cause any crashes unless you get a lot of stuff loaded in memory (what happens is there is a bad spot in the ram and it doesn't present itself until that spot is filled - sometimes this could be at the very end of the stick...) this appears as random crashes and many times is not easily diagnoseable...
I have had some bad experience with bad memory sticks, and most of the time they post and pass the memory test perfect. However, as soon as the computer is in windows, it begins to screw up, from blue screens to freezing. Thats my experience.
