What would cause some random files to have BLUE text in windows?

Windows XP SP2,
some random files on my C Drive have BLUE text, yes BLUE
i have 4 HDDs
C,D,E,F

only happens on C, seems to happen to random jpegs, HTML files and Text files
as well as just about everything else, exes and such

I know im spyware free, i run adaware and spybot once a week, and update them, im also running Kerio Personal Firewall and im behind a router, Use Opera for intenet and such


anyone have any idea whats going on, im not expirencing any issues im just curious as to why these are blue
 
compressed? i didnt compress them,
so im guessing it was windows doing its compression dealie after xx amount of days
 
Erm, Windows doesn't have a compression dealie. Are you thinking of system restore?

You can check to see if a file is compressed by going to properties, then advanced.

Are these files in all different directories? Typically, the hotfix directories in the Windows directory are compressed.
 
yes they are in EVERY directory on C:

no im not thinking of system restore, i thought i remember there being a setting to have teh drive compress old files that arnt used frequently

if i go to properties - advanced on one of the files

these 3 are checked
file is ready for archiving
for fast searching , allow indexing for fast searching
and
compress contents to save disk space

So they are compressed. I'm not sure how they got that way, since you say you didn't compress them.
 
no not every single file

but there is a file in every folder that is
and some that are not in thoes folders as well

no it causes no issues whatsoever, im just curious as to why its happening, i prob wouldnet have even noticed it if i didnt have to go looking for a document i couldent find on the other 3 drives
 
did you ever try to do a disk cleanup? it gives you an option to compress the files to save some space. and when you do that, the compressed files are displayed in blue color.
 
yes ive done that before but NEVER seen the blue files before, ive always "Deleted compressed old files" also

ive had XP installed on like 6 different computers and done disk cleanups on all of them, first time ive seen this
 
Yeah but maybe there is like 20k files compressed in more then 500 different folders. I assume you want me to uncheck all possible files in all those folders. I can select all the files of a folder but still, there must be a better way ?
 
Ok, I found a way, if anyone want to do this.
Create a stupid file at the root of the file tree you want to "uncompress". Then compress this file. After that select the file and folders of the root directory. Go into property, advance and remove the compress option. When you click ok or apply, a popup window will appear asking if you want it to be done only for the stupid file or also for all the folders, and files and folders under the said folder.

Darn I'm bad explaining things, if someone want furter details, I'm sure someone here as understood what I wanted to say and hopefully can reformulate it for you.
 
There's also the compact command, you could run 'compact /u /s *.*' from the root and it'll decompress all of the compressed files.
