What would be the language of choice?

Right now I'm just beginning to learn how to program in Java and I enjoy it. But utlimately I'd like to program some financial analysis stand alone programs. I was wondering what language would be the choice for programming for this pursuit. For some reason, I'm thinking C++ only because I "heard" this one particular program was done with it.

Ideas? Thoughts?

edit: A thanks! 😀

java should do it just fine i would think.

C++ is very similar to java. I personally like plain old C the best.

Damn.. you sure know how to ask for help. 😀

Stick with what you know (Java) and are you by any chance interested in developing enterprise apps? Or do you plan to work at companies that ship shrink-wrapped products?

If you are interested in learning something new, give .NET and C# a try.

In all honesty, I'm not familiar with the difference in enterprise apps vs. shrinked-wrapped products. Am I correct is assuming shrinked-wrapped products are those like Office XP, Norton.... that sort of consumer software?

The words give hint to business vs. consumer. Would that be a correct assesment? Either way, I'd like to be able to program of both scales if possible. Right now, I "don't know what I don't know" 🙂
Once I figure out what it is that I don't know and must know, I can begin learning along those lines.

At least you are better than many software developers out there. 😉 You are on track in identifying what you know and what you don't know. 🙂

You are close. "Enterprise apps" are kinda vaguely defined, but they generally refer to internal software projects funded by a customer (i.e. some big guy in the company) to be consumed for internal use. Generally speaking, they often tend to be distributed applications, so if you are interested in this area, you might want to check out J2EE or .NET and learn more about software architecture.
