What brand should I look into?

Keep an eye on FS/FT for a used 6800GT/Ultra or an X800XL/X850XT ... one of these 4 will offer the best performance in a used card, especially the XT which will keep pace with a 7800GS in most benchmarks & outperform it in some too.

New cards will cost quite a bit more in AGP format & the best bet for the money will be the 7600GT AGP.
Good
Please posted in order of performance with avg price next to it (Used)

A month ago I upgraded to a 512mb x1650 pro from my dead 9800 pro and its not good enough. Games play a little better but not what I was expecting. I'm going to sell this and get a x1950 soon.

Listed in rough order of performance in most games from fastest to slowest ... prices are rough estimates because I havn't been keeping up on FS/FT prices lately:

(1) X850XT / XT-PE - fastest of the bunch by a good margin, especially if you can find a "PE" (Platinum Edition) ... X800XT is harder to find but very close in performance ($100 - $140)

(2) 6800 Ultra - Really its a tough call between this & the X800XL performance-wise ... needs a bit more power the 6800GT & some models have a loud fan ($85 - $125)

(3) X800XL - Runs quieter & cooler the the X850XT but considerably slower too - As mentioned very close in performance to 6800 Ultra ($70 - $100)

(4) 6800GT - Lower clocked version of the 6800 Ultra with smaller HS/fan & lower power draw - many can be overclocked to Ultra default levels, but will run very hot ($65 - $100)

You could also consider an X800 Pro which you may be able to find for +/- $50 but performance is only a bit faster then a 9800 Pro in many cases.

The x800pro (12pp @ 475mhz) is a bit slower than the 6800gt, but it's still a good deal faster than a 9800pro.

That sounds like a pretty good deal, depending on what "recertified" means ... where did you see one for that price?

Edit: I'd go for the XT ... theres no garantee the X850 Pro will flash to an XT without problems & the XT is a lot faster.

you may have a weak power supply, but a p4 3.4 is enough cpu for a 7800Gs at higher res

Yea PS is from Dell 400 SC (stock ps)
1024 768 should be good enough
Perfer in 1280 1024

For the price you really can't beat the X850XT for $110 because it will beat a 7600GT in virtually every benchmark/game & will be very close to or match the 7800GS at those resolutions, plus will save you $50 or more.

The X1950GT would be faster than any of the cards we've discussed so far, so I think it should really come down to a choice between it & the X850XT... the cards in between arn't worth their additional cost over the XT & can't match the GT's performance.

How to: Flash your X850Pro To XT/PE and unlock 16 Pipes!

or

How to: Mod your x800/x850
