What SINGLE card would be better than 2 stock 8800GT's for gaming in general ?

Other components ect.. Q9450, 4 gig 6400 ram, Asus P5N-D in an Antec 900 case.
750 watt power supply. Good air flow.

Thinking 9800GTX, HD 4870 or GT260 ???????

i'd take one 4870 instead of 2 lesser cards.

less chances of failure, less heat, less power draw

The HD 4870 is a good deal right now and so is the GTX 260 if you like Nvidia products.

You think the 4870 512 would be faster than 2 8800 GT 512's in SLI ? I wouldn't mind one
less heat source and a tad more room in my case. One problem would be no future
SLI with the 4870. Shame since I can get it cheaper than the 260 even at retail
outlets like Micro center and Frys near me. I'm not gaming much but when
I get the urge I want good frame rates and graphics. Any other thoughts ?

Just read the links mentioned. The 9800GTX wasn't all that bad a card either.
I can pick up one of those for dirt cheap, well under $200. Problem is the
not much, if any at all, performance gain over my 2 8800 GT's.

If you already have 2 cards then SLI them, however, if I was making the choice right now assuming you had no cards, I would get a 1 card solution. SLI is merely a stop-gap solution for not having enough horsepower in one GPU (industry has been here before, remember the Voodoo2?). Anyway, I think that 1 card is better than 2 especially if you don't game 24/7.
