What would be a "worthwhile" upgrade to a P4 2.53GHz?

While my computer is running ok, I'm getting the itch to upgrade my system. It's been a few years. Right now I'm running a Gigabyte MB with a P4 2.53 with 533MHz bus. I'd like to wait for a few of the new NForce4 MB's and get one of the non-SLI ones once the reviews are out - maybe in late Jan or early Feb. So I guess my question is - what CPU would you consider a worthwhile upgrade? How about the 939pin AMD 64 3000+? Is that enough of a step up? I'm looking to update my system but I don't want to make a latteral move, either.

Thanks for any advice you may have.

How much money do you want to spend? What do you do with your computer?

Depending on what you want do on your computer, the 3000 could be a small small a huge boost in performance. If you are going to overclock, definately go with a 90nm Athlon 64 (s939) which would be either the 3000, 3200, or 3500.

Thanks for the response. Money isn't realy an issue. I'm just looking for the best bang for the buck right now, while still getting some upgrade over my current system.

To be honest, I mostly surf with this computer, and I do the occassional gaming, of which I hope to do more in the future.
