What would be a solid college major and career choice nowadays?

I will be going to college in a short amount of time from now.

I am interested in knowing what people with experience in the computing/IT field would recommend as far as a major, as well as what would be a solid choice as a possible long term career.

I would perfer something that is moderately enjoyable with decent to good pay, with opportunities to advance.

So what would the successful experts of OT recommend for a college bound student? I was thinking Computer Science, but am open to all opinions.

Meh, there is already a very high number of un-employed people in IT, take some Gen Ed classes, see what else you like.

CS and CE are one of the most demanded college majors by employers. Easy to find a job with these degrees.

Agreed. I currently wish I had gone another route...

I'm a senior CS major specializing in network/system administration, econ minor. If I had to do it all over again I'd have gone to a school for economics, worked up to my doctorate and tried to get a job with the feds. Actually, thats my standing backup plan lol...

Why with a CS degree you have a better chance at making more money out of college than you would with a Ph.D in Economics.

You have a good chance at a 60K plus job out of school with a C.S degree.

What kind of work would one be doing with a CE degree? Same question about CSE.

To the OP:

Also I was in CompEng, but transferred to Electrical as I found it was too software oriented for my liking, it really depends on what you want to do.. If you want to deal with electronic design and such, then EE migt suit you better, but if you enjoy software and writing software for hardware, then CE would work better.

They publish studies all the time on this. Average starting salary for a CS major is around 60K a year, and is in the top 5 most demanded college majors.
 
I have seen fellow computer engineers working in the following areas:

Programming
Modeling & Simulation
Electrical Engineering
Communications (my current job)

Of course each of those areas have vastly different jobs. Even within comm I have seen jobs varying from working on satellites, network engineering, and testing weapon systems.

This is by no means the complete list, just what I have personally seen other computer engineers end up working as.

I'll give you that it's in the top 5.. coming in at 4, although Engineering still tops it, also, where'd you get that 60k figure from?

Thanks for all the great info. My high school GPA is 4.0, and I am intending to keep it as close to that in college as I can. I was thinking about Florida Tech.

I can't say I've heard of Florida Tech (from VA myself), but one thing to do is to make sure the university you choose has at least a decent reputation for the field of study you plan on following (or at least for overall science/engineering if you think you might switch majors). The U doesn't have to be one of the top in the nation, but you don't want to end up being one of 4 students in that major having a few professors and no real options for classes.

It seems to be pretty decent. I have to read up on it more, but this is the closest school to where I live, and if I went here, I could save a large amount of cash just by living at home and driving to school everyday rather than pay for room and board.
