Perhaps the greatest socialist program of all time directly fueled America's unheralded post war prosperity and was the key force behind that generation having the strongest middle class ever seen, before or since, on the face of this Earth.
It was the GI bill.
Read your history. The GI bill enabled so many of that generation to go to college and to own a home, many of whom would have never otherwise been able to do either. That was the foundation of their unprecedented economic success.

You can debate the merits of excessive military all you want and whether or not that represents a type of socialism (I would say that it does), but paying the soldiers who serve is not socialism (in fact, the opposite would be true, where not paying them would imply that their lives belonged to the state). It is fee for service.
