What would be a better sound setup?

Would it be better to have 2 Infinity 605CS (for example) components in the front doors and 2 692.3i 6x9's in the back or just to have 4 components all around? What difference would it make? I just used the Infinities as an example but those speakers are the ones I want to get later on :) I don't actually plan on buying these for a little bit but I want to learn more about car audio for when I do have a car. Of course the system would have a sub added on later ;)

Also what's the deal with crossovers, (ie how should they be set?) and how does one connect a subwoofer to a head-unit/amp with only 4 outputs?

most head units are going to have pre-amp outputs that you wire to a sub amp

exactly, but if you have 4 pre-amp outputs aren't those wired to a 4-chan amp, which goes to the 4 speakers? Where do you plug the sub into then?

You don't need components all the way around.
6x9s in the rear are easy to mount.
You can't really mount components correctly in the rear so it is pretty much a waste of money to put them there IMO.
