My husband and I rent a house with another guy. About 2 months ago my Grandmother died, and her house became vacant. My family is offering the house to my husband and I for an incredible deal, but they want us to move in two months before our current lease expires. We agreed to do so, and in order to not screw my roommate who will not being moving with us, we promised to pay our share of rent (2/3) until the lease is up. The problem is, the water and electricity are in our names, not the roommates. I want to disconnect service when we are moved in to the new place and have him put it in his name for the remainder of the lease. I just don't want to pay for his electricity and water usage and feel that if we were to keep it in our name there would be an issue with the bill. So, what should I do ATOT?

Cliffs:
husband and I are moving before lease is up
will be paying rent to roommate until the lease expires
want to take electricity and water out of my name so I can have it in new place
roommate does not understand this
I come to ATOT for all my roommate issues

You don't want to pay for his water/electricity use, but you are willing to pay the 2/3 of rent still.

Why not just make it easier and keep the electricity/water in your name with the understanding that you will take out the cost of utilities from the 2/3 rent you are still paying?

That is a good idea. I'll present that. He "blew up" and got all butthurt when I even mentioned taking electricity out of my name. I am willing to pay the rent until the lease is up because that is the agreement I made. I never signed an agreement saying I would keep electricity in my name until the lease is up.

Switch over the electricity and water to him. He should have to pay for what he uses. I think you are doing enough to help out by paying 2/3 of the rent, which most people wouldn't do!

When I was a dumb kid, I had roomates. The electricity was in my name. I blew out my knee and couldn't work so I had to move in with my parents. I left the electricity in my name and I got hosed. They never paid the bill and I got stuck with it.
I did get some of the money back but I had to physically take it from one of the guys.

Get the electricity out of your name.

The ball is in your court.........
You can just have the services terminated and let him decide whether he wants them turned back on.

The only problem is, those utilities are going to have to be taken out of their names at some point. Might as well do it sooner rather than later IMO.

The problem with changing utility billing, is they charge you for a new account setup. I'd keep the bill in my name, and take it out of the rent to save the extra charges. This is assuming the roomie will be moving out when the lease is up. If he's staying, he should get the bill changed over to his name and eat the cost.

Transfer ownership to him. If he has anything to say about it just tell him that it helps your credit score to have monthly bills in your name (when paid on time of course). And of course if he REALLY fights it, tell him you're just going to shut it off then. One way or the other you're getting out of the energy bill.
