What word would the following be defined as an explanation of

"Apples and oranges" is probably the best (i.e. most readily understood) term. If pressed for something more "high brow", I'd use orthogonal.

My favorite is always "apples and jupiter" for things that are extremely different. One is measured in grams, the other in septillions of metric tons.

Me thinks that Russell is looking for the English word to describe the term "apples and oranges". I know not. But nonsequitor is close.

Fav of mine was "Did you bring your lunch or drive to work?"

orthogonal wouldnt be the best word imo because it has more meaning than just difference.

Heh, I don't know why apples to oranges caught on, after all they are a little bit related as both are fruit/food and spherical.

How about "extremes"?

Seems to fit... things at one extreme are measured on a different scale than things at the other extreme. Very very short distances, i.e. wavelength of the visible spectrum of light: nanometers or Angstroms. Very very long distances: lightyears.

How about... "different"? Or one could say "very different" if one needed to emphasize the difference.. 🙂
