The Koreans use unlocked phones on CDMA networks with RUIM cards. Blame the CDMA carriers not the technology. CDMA is actually a much superior transmission technology than GSM is.


For the record, I have both Verizon and TMobile - Just re-upped for two years on VZW for an LG Dare, while I've had my Wing for over a year. It's still, sadly, the top of the line WinMo model they offer! (I'm not paying $700+ to import an unlocked phone)

eBay is a great place to find unlocked phones. Some online retailers also deal with unlocked phones as well, but I find it's harder to get a good price that way. I got lucky with my current phone (it's old, but was pretty cutting edge when it came out) and found it on Craigslist for cheaper than a locked phone. It wasn't brand spanking new, it had been used once for a magazine review and then put back in its package, so it was like it was never used when I got it.

From a technical perspective, I agree. CDMA is better than TDMA.

In fact, 3G UMTS is W-CDMA. So even phones that some people call "GSM" are running CDMA. Looking into the near and distant future, all phone technologies are moving to some form of CDMA-based scheme.

Still, right now, the best phone selection is on 2G GSM. So which is best depends on whether you are judging it from a technology perspective or in terms of which system has the better phones.

Asian stores are awesome too. I just get my phones in Asia.

I picked up a Nokia 5310 today, not the most advanced phone but I love how it looks, fairly well built too. I seem to find most clam shell & slider phones ugly anymore. 5310 might be the best looking US phone I've seen aside from the iPhone.

T-Mobile has a couple slick phones.

Hell I have yet to see any U.S. phone release for any carrier be solid ,we get shit phones while asia and europe get the good stuff..:brokenheart:



The best unit t-mobile has is the wing and that's so over priced it is laughable.


My iphone is the best phone I have had for t-mobile and I have bvbeen w/ t-mobile before they were t-mobile...

I suppose so. However, all this really means to me is that GSM has the best phone selection. It's a bit disingenuous to say "GSM > CDMA", simply because of phone selection in the US.
