What!?!? WinXP Pro (Whistler Build 2428) has the 60Hz refresh problem in games too!! (and WinXP rant....)

Ok...Quake3 has the same 60Hz refresh problem in Win XP build 2428 as it does in Win2k pro (no SP).

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!?!?!? That's my only gripe with Win2k...

Ok...can someone name me one way this OS is better than Win2k?

[*]WMP6 is better than 7 or 8
[*]The new control panel layout is suck
[*]You have to call microsoft every time you change a major piece of hardware (which is probably monthly for many of us, if it was just a single activation I could deal with that...call and give them a number from the manual and get your CD key or something like that..)
[*]Win2k already runs everything from Win9x or WinNT (even all the Win3.11 games I've tried so far!) perfectly except DOS games, which it runs only with sound off.
[*]They have the same WDM driver model so it's not like I'm missing out anything there....
[*]Remote desktop access! Oh JOY! I wonder how many service packs it will take before they get this right so every hacker on the planet isn't worming their way into your computer.

I won't complain about the new hideous start menu or system restore because you can turn those off...I think the Whistler Skin is hideous, but again that's moot becuase you can use Classic or get your own. Those are kind of annoying...but it's just a few switches to flip when you first install so I could deal with that...

Can someone please tell me where the percievable benefit to this OS over Win2000 Pro is??? PLEASE?

I'm not talking vs Win98/ME that's obvious. WinXP Personal is a huge step over Win98/ME...but what does WinXP offer over Win2k...really?

Is there some software that won't run on Win2k that will on XP? Drivers maybe?

Well there are some features that I like. The built in CDR support is pretty handy. I think after getting used to the menu system it actually seems more organized. I did not think so at first, but after using it for 3 days then going back to Win2K I begin to think otherwise.

The one thing that does bug me so far is my Voodoo4 card. I have to use the default drivers installed by Whistler. If I try any other driver for it I will be stuck in 4bit 800x600. I do not get that part.

Why are so many of you bashing it so bad? It is still in beta and who really knows what it will be like when it is released to the public. I say give it a chance. You may end up liking it in the end. Look at all the people that use Win2K now that have never touched an NT based OS before. Now they bash Win98 that they used to love so much. I can remember how bad so many people bashed Win2K at first. I hated it at first.

I will buy XP if the activation BS is not required to use it. There is no way I will call M$ everytime I change systems or hardware.

My guess it will be a automated type deal under a 800 #, no one will want to staff it to cover the call volume. IMHO

Good point. If they start out with humans, we can easily keep them flooded beyond hope. Then they'd be forced to use machines. Or maybe they'd use humans and 2 hours on hold so that its really hard... :| Micro$oft is irritating. AOL is still worse though.

OK, easy enough.........it's still a BETA! The whole thing was derived from 2K......of course it's going to closely mimik it at this point. Beyond that, most of what you point out is personal preference! Wait at least until RC1 to bash it this badly......if there are no further improvements at that time, feel free to trash it completely! Remember......no one will force you to upgrade....... 😉

True it's personal opinion, but I did name it a rant. So it's not like you weren't warned 😉

It's not really a matter of it being beta...I suppose if they make drastic changes...but I don't like most of the stuff they are throwing in, and this registration thing sucks. I'm sure little issues like Quake3 crashing when I change res will get worked out. I'm not bashing it on things like that...just the general feel of the OS, and I don't think that's going to change much.

I assume it will run everything pretty much the same as Win2k. It's just the look & feel that's different. And I was ranting about that.

Like I said it was a rant and you were warned 🙂

This whole activation thing just has my back up...I'd probably use it if not for that.
