What will we do as a civilization when we double our population?

Don't worry about it because the weight of humanity will turn the earth into an uninhabitable desert and the population will stop growing.
 
How about using a microfraction of our planet colonization money to drop a nuclear power plant at the south pole, use it to subsidize power while we build a huge wind generation system, then step 3: contained residences/commercial/industrial and profit. Think of all the fresh water there.
Even if we look at the eventual melting, the things we would learn from it would go a long a way towards improving our planet colonizing skillset.
