What will Trump do to "fix the economy"? Is it really broken?

HomerJS

Those who believe Trump will "fix the economy" tell us a few things.

What part of the economy is failing? Can you name one thing besides prices are higher since Covid?

1. Cost of living/prices. Exactly what will Trump do to lower the cost of eggs, bacon and gas? Be specific since Harris was criticized for not articulating policy solutions.
BTW - Oct 2024 inflation rate is 2% annually

2. What other parts of the economy are failing and what is the Trump solution?

3. Trump says the economy is failing. How can you market $100K watches in a failing economy?

Block minimum wage hikes.
More tax cuts for rich people.
More union busting.
Tariffs on imports.

All things that help the common man.
I get it but even if this list is taken as a real example...

Block wage hikes: Workers who process eggs are working at a given salary now. Stop their wage increases can't effect current prices.
Tax cuts for the rich: Translate that into lowering the price of eggs.
Union busting: Egg producers are not unionized.
Tariffs: Eggs are produced here. No effect.

If he enacts his desired policies (mass deportation and universal tariffs), he's pretty likely to spark a not so mild recession. Budget deficits will soar and even if he doesn't cut entitlements within 4 years, he'll make it all but certain that Medicare and SS spending will have to be drastically trimmed. The Republicans wet dream is to "starve the beast" so this is all according to plan, really.

But all that shared pain will help "pay" for another corporate income tax cut, and the rubes that vote for him probably still won't learn.

I have been asking a couple replublicans this morning who say "the economy" is why Trump won, and then I asked them "what is Trump going to do to make your eggs $2 again?" and not shockingly, no one has any answer.

Deporting workers will hike prices on eggs though.

But fewer people will be eating them so it all works out.

BTW, I've been to pig farms, industrial plants with open vats of acid, sewage plants, Lexington, KY in high summer, the oldest operating refinery in America, and have to sleep with myself every night and I have never smelled anything as bad as an egg farm.

drill baby drill
We are already the #1 oil producing country. Happened under the Negro.

Oil is a global economy so a small increase will have little effect.

Oil is at $70/barrel. Oil companies ain't about to do anything that will cause prices to fall further like increasing supply.

Keep trying you Trumpers. Tell us again why you voted for this guy. Not you @outriding I get the joke.

The economy has been trending upwards and is already pretty good. And Trump will ultimately take credit for the good economy he inherited. And people will believe him. They'll believe him if he says the moon is made of cheese.

This election was never about the economy anyway. It was about the hate, stupid.

This is a bit callous, but I can’t help but wonder if more expensive eggs might be a good thing for a lot of our populace…

When the farms around here fertilize with chicken shit you can always tell because when you walk outside you get smacked in the face with a stench that can only be described as "pepperoni dog fart." They always seem to fertilize the Friday before 3-day weekends so the air is saturated for every holiday.

We went back and forth about this issue back before Biden dropped out. Yes by most metrics the economy is fucking humming. Unemployment is as low as it can realistically get. Stock market is at or near all-time highs. GDP is fucking humming.

The problem is that the metric that matters to most people, the one that most people actually feel, real median wages is floundering. There was a bit of a boost to it when BLUE states enacted all their minimum wage increases, something Trump and Republicans fight tooth and nail, but other than that it has taken a beating from housing costs (something the feds can't really fix), and inflation (which was a global issue but we kept it under control better than most).

When Republicans are in control, Fox News points to the first three metrics to "prove" the economy is great and everyone accepts it without question. When Democrats are in control, Fox News claims they are faking the numbers or ignore them and scour the country for every overpriced product they can find to "prove" the economy sucks and everyone accepts it without question.

So I looked up the weekly real mean wages from 2017-2024 and got

2017 $885
2018 $891
2019 $899
2020 $951
2021 $983
2022 $1,032
2023 $1,095
2024 $1,165 (Q3 estimate)

As you can see the numbers were really stagnant during Trump's term until Covid hit. I'm guessing the stimulus spending raised it in 2020, 2021. Look at Bidens numbers 2023-2024. Bigger increases vs under Trump.

Try again

Where did you find this? Every time I searched I could only find up to 2022.

The billionaires just took over the US. I'm sure that will work out fine for us little people. If people think costs are going to come down I have a bridge I would like to sell. Companies found out that you will pay more for your good and services so why would they lower prices? Just look at Nvidia if you want the perfect example.
