Well...considering Microsoft decided to call their new OS Windows 7, I wouldn't be surprised if they call it the Xbox 3.
Considering MS went with "Xbox 360" due to not wanting to be perceived as lesser than the PlayStation 3 with an "Xbox 2", I very much doubt they're going to use a number at all for their next console.
Yea but the Xbox is a much more established brand now.
They could call it the Xbox 4 if they use the Windows 7 numbering scheme, considering Win7 is actually 6.5 internally.
The original Xbox was Xbox 1.0
The 360 was Xbox 2.0
The NXE was Xbox 3.0
The next Xbox will be 4.0
How is NXE 3.0??? It made it a brand new console??? Wow I didn't know that.
Microsoft is a software company so you could look at it from their perspective, I was just detailing one outlandish example of how you could consider the next console to be the Xbox 4 (which doesn't sound very cool IMO), and I'm not saying I would agree with such a chain of logic.
I do believe that not naming you consoles as Sony has (Playstation 'x'), you do make it possible to generate more buzz around your product before it's unveiling. You know the next playstation will most likely be called Playstation 4, heck I even remember the commercials they had for the
PS9 when the PS2 came out. But knowing this removes much of the mystery surrounding the product.
