What will Obama be taking from veterans later on in his presidency?

First off: I am not a republican or democrat. After 9 years in the Navy it became painfully obvious that both parties intend to destroy America, they each just have a different plan to get there.
2nd: I know full well that neither Obama or McCain had any serious plans to take care of old vets, or all the young boys coming back from the middle-east with their multitudes of mental and physical health problems. I did not vote in the presidential election based on which person would take better care of veterans. I expected both to ignore the issue as long as possible.

Having said all that, I think overall Obama will probably do a decent job of dealing with Americas current issues.
BUT, my mom just got a letter in the mail that looks something like this:

and I assume I will be getting one as well.

We were both wondering if Obama is giving us this one-time check of $250, exactly what will he be taking from us later on this year, or later on in his term? College money? Health benefits? What?

Honestly if the plan of both parties is to DESTROY America, does it really matter what his plans are? I'm not quite as negative as you.. I think both parties think they can save America, but both have flawed plans to do so.

No kids either.
I dont care if he's the anti-christ because I'm not religious.
I do have guns but am hoping that single-shot 22's will be excempt from the inevitable gun-bannings.

I have medical disability for my kidney stones (10%) and am also getting GI Bill money. I assume this special 250 is because of my declared disability.
Mom also has a medical thing.

Who would have guessed?
Well, anyone with half a brain, or more.

After years of huge tax breaks for the very wealthy someone noticed that those on disability, Social Security, or were disabled vets hadn't gottten squat.
Seems trickle down doesn't work.
So, this time to stimulate the economy they gave a one time payment of 250 to those mentioned above.
The rich admirers seem absolutely incensed about this.
I hope they have heart attacks.

A weeks groceries? I guess if the veterans are living on beluga and truffles. That would last me a month or so. Send the money to me and I'll stretch that budget right out.

Thats a fair question.

I assume (partly because he's a democrat and partly just because he's a politician) that if he is giving free-bees out to veterans right now then he must be gearing up for something hideous later on.

Here's info on the $250 payment:

The Economic Recovery Payment

A one-time payment of $250 will be made in 2009 to:

Retirees, disabled individuals and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration.
Disabled veterans receiving benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Railroad Retirement beneficiaries.

This is just a small part of the (almost) $800 billion stimulus plan.

Do you think Obama intends to take something from the other millions of people who received some benefit too?

Look, when they were throwing money around they knew politically that they couldn't leave out retirees etc. The vets being a popular group just got a little 'something' as well. I see no reason to belive that the $250 benefit is part of some larger scheme to later take something away from you.

But will Obama try to take something away from vets? Could be, he already tried the whole private health insurance thingy.

I think every group is at some risk of having something taken away in some form, the economy and falling federal revenue dictates this reality.

There are two main possibilities. This is especially true given his massive campaign promisses to boost veteran spending.

Either

1) Obama blows through trillions of dollars with no method to get us back on track.

or

2) Obama pays for these trillions of dollars by trimming excessively bloated programs. The only two programs that are sizable enough to pay for the spending are social security and medicare.

If Obama chooses #1, he'll go into the political dustbin as a high-spender who solved nothing. If Obama chooses #2, he'll commit political suicide but will save those major institutions and accomplish something that few other presidents had the will to do. He could pass his spending agendas, balance the budget, AND fix long-term insolvencies in the federal government.

To answer your question: either #1 he'll take nothing from vets or #2 he'll trim SS/Medicare payments by about 15%-20%.

Until the wars are over and the troops are home I don?t think anyone will attempt to take anything from Veterans or Active duty Military. Honestly the past 8 years have shown a substantial increase in pay, benefits and standards of living. I don?t think that trend will end any time soon. Besides Veterans benefits are crap. There is far larger fish to fry then the shit retirement we receive.
