what will it take before you buy a blu-ray or HD-dvd player?

Sudden infusion of cash.

Otherwise I'll wait till it's under $200. I'd have to buy a new display as well. I'd get both at the same time.
I'm content to sit back and watch prices fall.

When Planet Earth is released on HD-DVD, then I will immediately buy one. Just for that show only.

Are you sure? I heard BluRay (though could definitely be wrong).

Being release on both April 24th I believe.

A multi format player under $100. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs for under $5. My DVDs look pretty good unpconverted and it will be a very long time before anyone convinces me that either are anything I need or really want.

Well first I'd have to get a HDTV.... I suppose them being priced under 100 dollars and having an HDTV, and only having one of them left would do it...

I would buy an HD-DVD Drive or Blu-Ray Drive under one of the following conditions:

1) I finally get an XB 360 and decide that I have the money to allocate to the HD-DVD add-on
2) I finally get the PS3 (most likely on or around the release of FF XIII)
3) Once there is a clear winner, I still haven't bought the PS3, and there is a Burner out for said winner

So all the people that answer, when I get an HDTV, are you waiting for HDTV because you are being financially responsible or because you don't think HDTV content is compelling yet?

i didnt plan on getting a HDTV. BUT my 36'' tube died on me. there is not much out besides HDTV's now.

An act of god - something along the lines of god miraculously giving me enough money to buy everything in the world and then a little extra for a blu-ray or HD-dvd player.

For me, the answer is both.

I have great quality standard TV sets. Combine that with entertaining shows/movies and I'm perfectly happy. There just isn't enough to compell me to get an HDTV. Yes, I've seen it and they do look a bit better. But the novelty wears off quickly and I see very little benefit.

Plus, why throw away perfectly good TVs and spend thousands of dollars to replace them + thousands of dollars in new HD players and movies + more money each month for content?

Sometimes when you are happy and perfectly satisfied, you don't mess with a good thing. In ~10 years when my TVs die, I'll get HDTV. Actually, with 10 years of technology progress, I'll get something far better than what you now drool over.

..when it shows up at costco for 59.95 it will be mature technology and will prob.playback both formats including existing present technology dvd's. Then I'll buy one.

I have the 360 drive already. HD looks much better then upscaled DVDs on my HTPC, well worth the $200

I'll buy a PS3 when it's down, retail, to about 350-400.

I am up to about 15 Blu ray movies (only have 4 games for it) now to watch on my launch day PS3 on a Toshiba 62" 1080p DLP set...

not watching something in high def is a bitter pill to swallow now... 🙂

I'm hoping I'll never have to.

EDIT: By the way, do you think DVDs will stay around indefinitely? I just don't see the benefit of the Blu-Ray or HD-DVD for the average consumer. How long till we're forced to buy one or the other due to movies not being released on DVD?

Had 50" 1080p TV already and was fortunate enough to get a 25% off certificate for Amazon.com. Got a PS3 for $450.

1) When a 40in+ 1080p HDTV that has color equal to what can be produced by a CRT for less than $1500 hits the market.

2) One of the formats wins out completely.

3) Copy protection is hacked or content is available for rent at local Blockbuster. I refuse to own something I can't use as I see fit.

Well for starters, it won't be until after I buy an HDTV. 😉

Yeah, I don't own an HDTV either and I can't imagine dropping such money for a TV. I'd buy an amazing computer monitor before I dropped cash on a TV.

I agree about the benefit of HD DVDs to the average person. There is a much larger gap in regular TV between SD and HD because of all the limitations of SD broadcast. HD television shows can be in dolby 5.1, are much easier to get at full picture and sound quality, transmit show info, etc. Also, a DVD looks a lot better than just about any SD content on TV, even on digital channels. To me anyway. Hd DVDs the real major difference is in the screen resolution. DVDs already have good sound quality and lots of extra info on them.

1. Considering that 40+ in CRTs are either non-existant or extremely rare, so that point is moot.

2. Agree

3. DVD wasn't available at Blockbuster right away either. Copy protection has been hacked. You can't use most things as you see fit. Can't use your car as you see fit, can't use your house as you see fit (extreme cases), can't use VHS as you see fit, can't use DVD as you see fit (both within legal bounds)....etc.

i'll buy all that crap when i can get a decent-sized 1080P monitor for less than $1000, they sort out the format war, and i can get the winning player from a name brand for less than $200. until then i'll suffer with my crummy little old CRT and hand-me-down interlaced DVD player.
