What will I need to burn 1:1 DVD's?

My nero trial has run out and before I can reformat my harddrive (can I do this without a floppy?, mine is fried) I need to burn a cd or two to back up my documents and music. So I need to apparently buy some type of burning software. I am also buying a NEC dual layer DVD burner and I want to be able to burn 1:1 copies of DVD's in original quality. What software will I need to do this? (I am thinking currently that dual layer discs arent available or horribly expensive, but soon enough they will be out and I figure I could do a couple of single layer dvd's and then once I can get my hands on some dual layer ones I can just use those singles to make a double, sound ok?) Anyway I would like to get software that will do it all, burn cd's, dvd's and all that. I've read some recommendations on here but a lot have to do with compressing and cutting parts out to fit on one disc. And are movie dvd's protected? I know with games you needed a good burn that could do sheep3 or something like that a few years back when I was into that stuff.

If you want to make a backup of a DVD, you need the following software:

1) smartripper - rips the dvd to your hard-drive
2) DVD2AVI - splits the vob files into one video file and one audio file
3) TMpegEnc - converts this audo and video file into a DVD-friendly video.TS and audio.TS file
4) Any application which can burn a Video.TS and Audio.TS to DVD. TMpeg makes a great application for this.

There are a bunch of articles out on the web that will tell you how to make 1:1 copies of a DVD. If you use the method above, you will get the full quality of the video, but you won't get the menu's and special features. You'll just have a DVD with the video. I've done this a few times, and the only downside is waiting for each step to complete before going on to the next step.

If you want to just copy the whole thing, you need DVDxCopy. You might be able to find it on Kazaa or something. You can't buy it any more though cuz the MPAA sued 321Studios, who made the software.

You're not supposed to use this software to make copies of copyrighted video, however -- i just had to warn you about the legality of copying certain types of DVD's. Although i have no problem making backup copies of my own purchased DVD's to take on trips and stuff.

Ya I just want a copy set to have at school, they are more likely to walk away here. So basicly I need to get the hook up on DVDxCopy through somewhere like iRC, kazaa etc

Can it burn music and stuff too?

DVDxCopy will only copy DVD's. If you only have one DVD drive (a burner), the program will first write the DVD to your HD and then you will swap in DVD's and it'll write to the DVD from your HD. If you have a DVD drive and a burner, you can do a direct copy. The only thing is that the program isn't flawless and sometimes crashes mid-burn. This can become an expensive annoyance if it eats up too many 2$ DVD's. Luckily the price of DVD's is dipping down to and below the 1$ mark, but for awhile, they were 3 bucks a pop.

anyway, the program is available on p2p programs, but i recommend that you download the orginal program and not DVDxCopyExpress because express requires an internet activation, which you will be unable to do now that the program has been discontinued -- even if you can find a keygen, the website will not activate any software.

and i suppose i need to remind you that downloading this program would be illegal :) So don't do it. Unless you are comfortable with the limited risk involved.

Can't you just make a image of the DVD and then burn it? RIP DVD -> DVD.IMG -> BURNT DVD

Doesnt dvdshrink "shrink" the dual layer dvd's so they will fit on one? I dont know I've never used the program but thats what I had thought it did, and thats not what I want.

I'm lazy I like to do it all in one step so I'd rather not have to make an image and then burn the image, unless I have to.

I'm sure I can find the dvdxcopy in some legal way.

Ditto. Smartripper (when necessary) + DVDShrink + Nero works very well.

HRMMM ... i have never heard of DVD shrink ... thanks so much for mentioning it!

Also, I gotta mention that i love Dr.DivX. It makes it really easy to copy a movie onto your HD or a CD. I like to divx a dvd to take it on the plane with me. This way, the laptop is accessing from your HD instead of from CD, which gives a huge boost to battery life. That was off topic, but had to mention it.

Get anydvd (http://www.slysoft.com/en/ ), and just use any copying program i.e. ner (using the copy disk option) but only if you want 1:1, now to put whole movie into a 4.3gb dvd you need other programs pm me, and i'll direct you to a link where it'll tell you how. Dvdxcopy is the worst program. ANydvd decrypts the movie on the fly, so when your computer reads the dvd, it'll recognize as a regular dvd without protection. It's also allows you to play dvd's from other regions.

EDIT: Disclaimer: I do not encourage the ILLEGAL copying of movies. You should only back up the movies you own..

Btw, there is no such thing as 1:1 copies of commercial DVDs, the blank media that you can buy (or the drive's firmware, I forget which), will not allow you to write to the sectors that contain the decryption keys, that are present on pressed discs. (Unless something has changed that I'm unaware of.) You would need "DVD for Authoring" media and a special drive to burn it, rather than the "DVD for General Use" media that is normally used for data purposes on consumer DVD burners.

Thats overkill for what he wants to do. All he needs is something like DVD Decrypter to make the disc image. What you are suggesting is better for making VCD/CVD/SVCD or ripping and converting audio/video, not just copying.

If you want something free and easy, use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to the harddrive. Use DVD Fab to split up the disc into 2 discs and keep all the options. Burn. Finished.

DVD Decrypter and DVD Fab are free programs. DVD Shrink is also free program and is great if you want to shrink movies down to fit one DVD.

You might want to refrain from talking about getting warez on these forums. The mods don't care for it too much.

EDIT: I just looked and apparently dual layer discs arent really available yet. So for the time being I guess I will have to use 2 discs. Using the procedure above what program do I use to burn?

Go check out the DVDshrink site. You can keep the menus or take them out. You can compress the video, remove things or keep it the same.

And if you have a DL burner and DL discs, DVD Decrypter is all you need. Make a DVD image, then burn it to a disc. Thats it.
