I have an Ivy Bridge (I Think) i5 processor on a Z77 Biostar board. I'm running an upgraded win7 to win8 operating system. Because I want to ( holler if I have nothing to gain from it) I'm thinking about simply lifting out the Z77 board and processor, and dropping in an haswell board and i5 1150 processor. I'll then go to bios and start with the win8 disc and run a repair. Should just work - right??

Well . . . . . I don't expect I'll see much difference. . . . but I will know there is technological changes that make a difference in overall system efficiency and functionality.

I'm not a heavy gamer, just Microsoft Flight Sim, which by the way for some odd reason refuses to load on my present win8 configuration.. . . .but I just thought it would be cool and I wouldn't have to start from scratch.

You can play around with trying this, that and the other for a long time or you can simply do a fresh install.

My vote > MB + CPU upgrade = Fresh install

I think it is not worth it. Except in applications that use avx2, you will only see a 5 to 10 percent gain.
And there are only a few apps that use avx2. Others should be coming, but who knows how many or when. If you insist on upgrading, I would spend the extra and get an i7. At least you would get the advantage of hyper threading.

As long as you keep the same SATA controller configuration, you will very likely be able to just boot off the new mobo with no changes. That being said, you aren't going to benefit from the upgrade performance-wise so it's kind of a moot point.

Gee guys, I just want to do it. Nothing more expected than the satisfaction of having made the swap. Then maybe I can sell the board and CPU intact for a reasonable price.

I kinda thought too that there couldn't be a tremendous difference to WIN 8 between Ivy Bridge Z77 and Haswell Z87.

I know - there can be unexpected glitches in running an upgrade as I did from WIN7 to WIN8 - really careful techs will do a fresh install - no upgrade. And there is a possibility there may be unexpected glitches with an Ivy Bridge/Haswell swap. I think I will risk it but not until the WIN 8.1 birthday.
