I'm confused. How does a force of (best guess, from what I've read) ~5000 'capture' large cities? How is this fundamentally different from the previous 'groups of crazies have random, meaningless shootouts with UN troops' that we've seen over the years? What makes the cities 'captured?'

When I came into this thread I expected to find some P&N wacko had chewed his leash off, but no such luck. It was only a matter of time, I suppose, but right now I'm very happy to be living on the opposite side of the planet. If we're lucky their reach will exceed their grasp and their empire will collapse after a couple years. If we're really lucky their failed rule will disillusion the next generation of fundamentalists, and that region might eventually stabilize into something a sane person might wish to live in.

That's what I said. We took that over and added on to it, so that makes it part of our embassy? Or is that considered separate? It looks heavily fortified. And it's all in the green zone. And look at those 2 rows of cooling units, that obviously lead UNDERGROUND. And those are 8 generator trucks parked just below that, and possibly a few more scattered around. That has to be an integral part of our embassy base there.

I think we used that big palace for a while. The embassy is a much smaller, entirely new building a little ways away. I think the whole area is all still under our control though. Maybe the Iraqi government uses the palace now?

Edit: The google maps view of the palace circa 2010 makes it look pretty much abandoned.
