california now has enough signatures to go thru with putting a bill that would legalize, tax and regulate marijuana for adults in the state. it would be up for vote in 2010. assuming it passes(which i think it will), what do you think the end result would be? think the federal goverment would turn a blind eye and allow it to go thru? one problem i see is people buying lots of pot and selling it in other states where its illegal.

Prohibition does not work, that was proven with alcohol (far more toxic and dangerous than cannabis), and the fact that this is up for vote is just more proof. I believe that this measure will pass and other states will follow the trend. It is time we stop criminalizing people and ruining lives over the use of this relatively safe substance.

This. People will use cannibus anyway. It isnt worth the cost/effort to try and police it.

It won't pass, but I wish it would. Support for the measure will go way down once the law and order groups unleash their attack ads on it.

If it actually does pass, very little will happen in California I think. Weed is already for all intents and purposes legal here.

dopers will use dope. what else is new??

This is part of the problem Pot was not ever consider a drug until the early 1900's. It was up till than an herd with many good uses. Daily use of pot tho is a questionable subject .

It would also help to change illeagal drug testing methods . After 3 days many drugs pass a drug test were as Pot can be detected up to 6 weeks after use.

This is a cop out drug testing law . TO drug test you have use a method that will actually give Drug user history that covers years. That would damage many upper class people and sports zeros and enternainment clowns. Who really contribute nothing to society but serve their master to distract us from maturing as a species

The number of California cops getting killed while enforcing bad law will drop maybe?

1. I hope it passes so that there are less lazy pot-heads around here.
2. I hope it doesn't pass because it means that MORE of my tax money will probably end up going to helping stupid people.

What?? I thought the stigma was that marijuana users weren't violent but peaceful and otherwise law abiding citizens, guess I was wrong?

But on another note I agree with the OP, the Fed would likely have to do something, I don't see how it couldn't possibly affect neighboring states and Congress, seeing as their power goes pretty much unchecked these days would likely intervene.

Users are one thing. Trafficers are another. Prohibition + demand = big bucks + violence. Remove prohibition and the big bucks shrink and the violence drops. We don't see people getting beheaded over beer distribution routes.

Technically there is a federal law against it so even if California legalizes it, it would still be illegal.

Of course in reality federal law enforcement does not bother to enforce things like that, so it would become legal for all practical purposes.

When people get used to breaking the law; then they will complain if the law is enforced

It would be awesome if California led the way towards rationality by legalizing marijuana. I predict that it would be a boon for the California economy and that California would benefit from increased tax revenue and marijuana tourism.

Which state will figure this out first and jump on the opportunity before the other states do? I've proposed that Michigan do this but it probably won't happen before another state does it.

If most people here cared as much about healthcare, the debt, taxes, etc as they do pot we would all have free healthcare, get taxed half as much, and have 0 debt. Legalize pot so all the stoners here will be running for snacks instead of voting democrat.

Are you arguing for the federal government's right to do this?
The Federal laws are in effect. Change them if they are wrong. Until then, to violate them is to take the chance that one can be caught and punished.

Also, the Feds may tie Federal funding to enforcement if CA passes such (which I doubt)
