oh come on. it's not an offensive, insulting comment by any stretch.

An overwhelmingly majority of youths couldn't put food on the table if it was delivered to them live or dead. I'm glad that you are the exception.

I'm not the exception by far. Isla is just stereotyping the kiddies on the internet, assuming every youth in the civilized world is a helpless fop in the wild. It's completely unrealistic.

What's needed is a change of heart, and for that, a readiness for a change of heart.

This thread itself is an example of what's wrong with us. Thinking about the end of the world as we know it, we're bickering about definitions, and who'll be best able to catch and cook chicken.

I believe that peace will come out of the next one, and/or a force for peace will prevent the full escalation to the sort of destructive capability known and imagined. Even if we're reduced to so-called sticks and stones, that in itself would not be enough to forestall yet another rebirth of technology and destructive capability and given the same mindset, the same circumstances.

I think then, that a brotherhood of mankind (gender neutrally) is necessary and thus inevitable over time. A change of heart is needed. How much actual destruction and bloodshed is necessary to want that?

In the case of another world war - will a lot of people die? Absolutely. Will it be the end of the world? Not possible.

Could the conflict destroy every living organism? Would our explosions rip apart the planet? Will some temporal/quantum weapons tear apart the very fabric of space and time? None of this is possible with current technology, or even 'realistic' sci-fi (an oxymoron, I know, but you get the idea) weapons conceivable within the near future.

I don't understand your point. You don't think we have enough technology/weapons to destroy the world? By the way, when people talk about the end of the world, they are talking about total destruction, where most/all the people are dead. You think that because cockroaches and single celled organisms may survive that this is not the end? Sorry, you are mistaken. There are enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world many times over.

Actually...there isn't. We had a thread about that in HT a while back, worth a look. :)

I'll just assume world = the planet earth itself, and I think we'll see a world war before the planet is physically destroyed.

When the worlds' oil supply moves into depletionary production then the onset of global econimc collapse begins. We're actually in a transient stage-OPEC is curtailing output because their wells are declining in output. If you want to do the research it is there to find.

We don't have to worry about another WW or terrorism. Once the slide begins then it doesn't matter. Mother earth does have her life support lads-it's the extirpation of this depencency on cheap energy.

Learning how to skin a rabbit and the plucking of a chicken are fairly important yet flacid. The most important skills are leather working, metalurgy, basic medicine/surgery, gunsmithing, sustainable agricultre techniques, woodworking, animal husbandry and analytical thought.

Do you know how to cultivate? How to clean and disinfect a deep wound? How set a broken bone? How to forge the arrow shaped wedge that your cultivator lost?
How to birth without injury a colt? How to raise seed crop? How to find peace within yourself?

I've seen very few people on these forums that would survive a world in which they had to live without electricity, shelter, food, and water.

Thank god you don't live beside me ;)

Nah, it will just deteriorate until we get to a Mad Max or Waterworld landscape. Then it will be survival of the fittest.

In that scenario the younger people are in serious trouble since they can't do anything without the help of their electronic gizmos.

Not only that, they have no idea how to produce food or cook it. They think chicken comes in 'breast' and 'nugget' and would freak if they actually had to kill and cook their own food.

Aw, c'mon! :) I'm a "younger people" and I know for a fact that I can build shelter, forage food, create fire, grow plants, raise animals, work on cars, take care of injuries and do pretty much whatever I would need to do to survive without the help of electronic gizmos. Most of my "younger people" friends have similar abilities. I didn't grow up on a farm or anything, but I was a Scout and I grew up hunting and being exposed to the outdoors.

While there may be many young people who would not be well off in a survival-of-the-fittest scenario, I don't think it's fair to lump us all into one stereotype. That would be like saying "older people" are all computer illiterate and need "younger people" to help them send an e-mail.

I think many older people would be in the same boat as many younger people. Those of us who have the ability to survive the described situation are in the minority regardless of what age group you are looking at.

That being said, I think WWIII will come before the end of the world... probably by about 30-45 minutes.

Not sure where the thread is, but start here: http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/gmap/hydesim.html

If you assume 1 MT as the average size bomb (actual number is probably considerably less), you need a ridiculous number to cover the surface of the Earth. don't feel like doing the math now, but remember there are geometric considerations if you try to completely cover a surface with a circular pattern.

Plus, if you assume a war, the explosions will be concentrated in strategic places and some bombs probably don't go off.

Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.

World War Three. End of the world will be in about 5 billion years when the sun moves to its supergiant phase. I think that there will be at least one more large-scale war on this planet between now and then.

And then the dude will wake up and realize that he's got a bad case of indigestion and decide not to go back to sleep since he's got to get up for work in 40 minutes anyway.

The world will end first

I believe the world is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions. Im talking about Old Testament real wrath-of-God type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies. Rivers and seas boiling. Forty years of darkness. Earthquakes, volcanoes!
The dead rising from the grave. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria

Good thing we're in the US, where all we'll get is a hurricane or two.

Ah, it's good to be on top.

Ahhhh, dont quote me, but, My mother has taken great pains to convert me to christianity. I'm not buying, though some of the stuff she talks about is quite frightening, because its written down in the bible.
Apparently, the current Pope is the last before a false pope takes power, a bringer of peace will establish 7 yrsm of peace in middle east then proclaim himself God, requiring all to have their bar code tatooed on their wrist. All Christians will disappear at that time in the rapture of God to be saved.
Get this bit. The armys of the east (china etc) will match against the old Roman Empire (EEU/ current european union), and the States are nowhere to be seen. So dont know what happens to you guys.
And to make it all seem plausible, the current weather patterns, disasters etc are meant to be at the beginning.........meaning the clock is ticking..

I dont buy a word of it.....<gulp>
