Right now the worst case scenario that anyone is predicting for SS is that it will pay out 75% of promised benefits. So I figure on that amount from SS. Add to that a 401k and a modest defined benefit pension (surprisingly enough, my company's plan is currently fully funded). After the house is paid off, I'll look at Roth IRAs though I don't trust that future Congresses will keep their mitts off Roth accounts.

Of course, we'll likely run out of oil by then so all bets will be off.

I'm pretty sure social security will be around when I retire in about 25 years, however I'm not counting on it for anything.

My primary income will be dividends from my investments and possibly some rental property income. Also, my wife is about 4 years younger and she'll probably work a good 5-10 years longer than me (public school teacher cushy job) but when she does retire she'll have a nice phat pension from the state.

i'll work less, at some point, i'll stop working full time and just work contract jobs, something like take a 6 month contract job, then take a couple months off to visit grandkids, then do another 3-9 month contract job, then take time off , etc etc

that's all well any good, but your body might disagree with your plans to work and start to break down.

you guys just made me realize is should stop putting money into 401k
that gets taxed at future tax rates
and i am not planning on retiring (so my income level won't drop a lot when i am older)
that means (since i believe tax rates will be much higher in the future) i am dumb for saving in a 401k

... Unless it's being matched by your employer. Or you think that tax rates tomorrow will be lower (haha yeah right) than tax rates today.

Roth IRA is your friend, buddy. There's also Roth 401k's now, does your employer offer one of those?

Retired 10/01/09 & living off of various investments & annuities for now. I won't be collecting SS until I'm 65 (in 2 yrs) for various reasons. My wife will then be retired and on a pension & SS. My house, cars are all paid off and in good condition. I pay for my own medical and don't owe any money to anyone.

My main concern is that I don't have any real outlets right now. I need to get more active in something but right now I'm doing what I want.
