What will be the last great Graphics card for AGP?

I plan on purchasing a top-o-line graphics card within the next 2 months. So What do you guys think it will be? A Geforce 6800 Ultra Extreme? I know AGP is getting pushed to the limit, but I have a 64 774 so I can't afford a new system for PCI-E.

What's Anand's take?

GeForce 6800 Ultra Extreme Platinum Super Fast Edition. 🙂

Yeah. 6800 Ultra is the best around right now. And to be honest, I haven't seen anything that makes it worth upgrading an entire system just to get PCIe.
So if you can swing the money, an AGP 6800 is the recommended way to go. Personally, I don't pay attention to reviews of "Doom 3 for nVidia, HL2 for ATI." All high end cards will allow you to run all games with all kinds of goodies turned up for eye candy. But, for bleeding edge technology and pure power, you can't beat the GeForce 6800 Ultra.

Sorta why I want a top-o-line card, I want the *LAST* relic of AGP. But do you think they'll make something new like a 6850 uber-ultra-extreme edition? or perhaps a 7000?

well PCI-e isnt about to take over. not like when Christmas hits your screwed with AGP. its gonna be around for awhile

Personally, I don't think they will make a 7000 version. As for a 6850, I think it is definitely in the realm of possibilities. PCIe isn't taking over very quick, partly due to the lack of PCIe AMD boards. But, ATI is definitely moving away from AGP and I think nVidia will follow suit.

AGP is definitely in the majority of systems and will be for some time to come.
I guess there is always room for the next video card refresh to include AGP versions. So, you're probably right. They may include a 6850 type model in the spring refresh that will most likely be AGP or PCIe with an AGP bridge. As for me, I think the difference between the current large technology jump and the smaller refresh jump (just increasing clock speeds and memory speeds) will have only a small impact. So for me, I would snatch a 6800 when the prices start to come down.

However, if you want the very last AGP card, I think you'll need to wait at least until the next crop of cards comes out. I think that's where the AGP line will officially end, since AMD and Intel will have PCIe capbilities and both ATI and nVidia will have native PCIe solutions. You may even need to wait until the next-gen hardware. I really don't see PCIe taking over from AGP as fast as the tech market would want them to.

AGP is gonna be here at least for a couple of more years. . . . then the high end cards will drop support for it.

It's a guess right now, but i'd say r500/nv50 - due next year - will both have PCIe and AGP versions for their top cards . . .

and r500 is reported to have 4X the processing power of the X800xt . . . 😉

no one knows for certain . . . certainly before the end of next year (imo)

There will probably be a paperlaunch next Spring 😉

I'm thinking Geforce 9 or 10 will be the last to be released for AGP .... maybe 11 or 12 though. There is still plenty of bandwidth in the AGP bus ... especially at 8x
