what were your favorite toys as a young kid?

I'm trying to think of a last-minute birthday gift for my niece, who's turning 3...

I'm thinking about maybe buying bulk play-doh?

I went to the source, but she was less than helpful...

loki: what do you want for your birthday?
niece: toys!
loki: what kind of toys?
niece: lots and lots!

Legos
Sculpey is nice if she can have supervision, as you can bake it and make your creations permanent.

Get her that doll that pretends to nurse that comes with a fake boob for the child to strap on. It's all the rage.

Crayola has a Ipad-ish devise for drawing and coloring. for the neice

As for when I was a kid
GI Joe - the big ones,
Legos
Erector sets
Lincoln logs

 on the play doh, it is a huge mess and it just drys out. Won't last long to play with that much of it. If a little older I would say yes but you have to also get the molds and tools sets like the barber one. That is the one where you cram play doh in the person and it squishes the doh out the head like hair.

3 yr olds are hard because they are too young for most of the cool toys. They are also to careless and rough with any good collectible toy.

Tip for adults; if you think about buying a kid a collectible type toy buy them two of the same one. One for them to play with and the other to keep. It can be used for a replacement in case they lose it or you can keep it until they are older so that they can have an original in the box to save or sell.

One year my wife suggested giving out playdoh to the younger kids for halloween instead of candy. I said 'WTF do you want our house to get egged?!' As I was handing out candy that very same halloween I hear a little girl at our next door neighbor's front door screech with delight 'I got playdoh! I got playdoh!' Unfortunately for me, my wife heard her, too. 🙁 Kids these days will eat anything it seems...

Anyway, it seems playdoh would be a good choice.

Legos and GI Joes

I preferred toys that did not have gimmicky spring-loaded projectiles or electronic sound effects.

Be aware that playdoh will not come out of carpets. We have lost a few it over the years. Now we only allow it on the porch.

Legos, but that probably doesn't help with your niece.
my sister doesn't really get too into gender-role toys... she bought my niece a train set for her birthday and a bunch of toy cars

but legos seem like they'd still be a bit too small for a 3 year-old

Lego makes specific types for young kids, big pieces and such so no choking hazards.

We handed out those mini jars of play-doh a few years ago too not knowing exactly what to expect; we were the most popular house on the block (maybe in town).

in addition to play-doh or lego suggestions, you could get crayola color wonder disney princess themed coloring/painting books or crayola crayons and some regular coloring books or jigsaw puzzles. my girls loved all the above. if you're a super-duper uncle you could get her an american girl doll and offer to take her there with her doll for a makeover. you would have to be some kind of superhuman to do that.

or you could pre-order MW3 for her.

When I was really young, my favorite toys were wooden blocks, and a clear plastic tube filled with a clear fluid and a colored oil that would move around.

...and finger paints.

Pics of sister's hardwood floors?
