What were the popular gaming magazines a decade ago?

You know I hadn't touched a computer since grade school when in the early 90's someone showed me an episode of pc gamer and when I saw Tomb Raider and resident Evil I realized just how special PC gaming really was. So what were the best magazines of the day for pc gaming?

CGW >>> PC Gamer most of the 90s. And of course by default during the 80s since PC Gamer didn't start until 1993.

By 2000 or so CGW had gone way downhill though. 🙁 And it eventually died of course.

PC Gmare in the late 90's was a really great magazine (I still have plenty of copies). It's now just a pamphlet compared to what it used to be.

PC Gamer. I used to have a subscription way back when.
This.
That.

Then.........
They turned to shit. Got rid of some of their best people and fudged up the format so bad it wasnt worth reading anymore.
Also, they handed out unrealistic scores and the reviews got worse & worse.
Widely speculated that they were taking kickbacks from the publishers. This speculation came right around the same time a former Gamespot employee admitted as much.

Have not gone back to them since the late 90's. Once in a while I go to Barnes & Noble and thumb through an issue. They still suck.

Computer Gaming World was the one I used to read. Never got into PC Gamer.

Game Informer!

I wrote a few articles for them back in the late 90's....when I was 10-12 😀

sadly, they never used them 🙁

I had one issue of PC Accelerator. It was overall fairly funny.

I remember PC Gamer started to suck right around that time. I'd had a subscription since like 96 and a few issues prior to that. They used to have HUGE issues with just tons of stuff in them. They started to shrink at the same time the content started to suck and I finally canceled my subscription since everything was on the internet anyway.

I kept issue number 4 which was the oldest issue I had and an issue from 1995 that I had particularly enjoyed and tossed the rest of them since they were just taking up way to much space. Its cool to flip through them and read "system requirements: VGA monitor" or "486 or better".

There were always those kinds of allegations about PC Gamer. I'm trying to remember one game, came out around '95 or '96, but CGW and all the other magazines panned it, the only magazine that gave it a good review was PC Gamer. (And of course the good review was put all over the ads for the game and everything.)

Then it turned out, "coincidentally", the reviewer from PC Gamer also happened to have written the strategy guide.

I was a PC Gamer subscriber for a long time, but once I started getting game info on the internet, I started realizing that PC Gamer are sellouts, just like the other major gaming review sites (gamespot, ign).

I used to read both CGW and PC Gamer in 1999-2000. They were pretty good back then, but I stopped following them after that. Pretty much all of the mainstream game magazines and sites became useless after 2004 or so.

PC gamer was one of the major ones and really the only way you got to play game demos. Downloading game demos on a 28.8 modem took forever.

Sellouts, the lot of them. Gamespot used to be a great gaming website pre about 2002 or so, then they jumped on the sellout train and give postive reviews for whomever has deep pockets.
