Earliest snapshot of the forums, at least since it's been at forums.anandtech.com:
https://web.archive.org/web/20000815062533/http://forums.anandtech.com/

First additional social forum (Off Topic being the original) is Politic and News and it comes online April/May 2003.

I don't know if the forums ever had subforums. Just forums.

Then over the span of a couple years came L&R, the garage, and health and fitness. DC was next, about 3 years ago, and home and garden is the newest. I don't bother with any of them though, either because I have no interest in the topic or the forum itself is a cesspit.

L&R is the worst forum I have ever seen. It's beyond a cesspit. It's just nasty.

And be honest: the tech forums are shit now too. They are ran by fanboys and industry plants. You can't take anything said there as fact and calling them out gets you banned.

I guess, I've only needed to use them a few times over the last several years so I have no idea. I don't even know what process node we're on these days, 22nm? Nope, looked it up and it's 14nm. My desktop is getting a little long in the tooth though, I'll probably be getting up to speed again within the next year or two.

When I made a discussion about corporate politics that just happened to include Nvidia and Samsung it magically got brought over to VC&G despite the fact that politics are usually going to include more than a few swear words and vitriol. That basically put the discussion under the control of the VC&G subforum. And obviously despite the discussion being about politics anytime there gets much talk about something like politics in the tech subforums the discussion is going to just get shut down and maybe some infractions for everyone.

Here I found a list of the forums from October 1999 (in the Category dropdown):

forums.png

Very similar to what Crono found in the Wayback Machine.

However, I've heard old-timers say that in October 1999 the forums were changed to FuseTalk. I think before that they may have been PHPBB. I don't know what the forums were on that forum software.

It would be sweet to have a 'no sub forum week' where everything is just rolled back into ATOT. One can dream.

It made the forums a much better place.

I do not understand needing a sub forum for every subject. Especially when most threads could go in any one of five.

P&N was split off because they wanted to get the crazy out of OT but didn't want to discipline and/or ban all the people necessary. Or so I hear, I wasn't here at the time. I don't know why we got DC exactly, I think it was thought that we needed a forum specifically for discussing things like adults. What we actually got was moonbogg-land, or P&N with delusions of grandeur in place of raw sewage. Regulars of either forum wouldn't last long in OT. L&R, the garage, H&C, and H&G could all probably be spun back in without much trouble though. Having L&R separate does have some advantages, like babe/stud threads that otherwise wouldn't be allowed, and it's not crawled by search engines. But overall L&R sucks right now, it has been taken over by certain cliques, same as DC and P&N, and outsiders either quickly conform or are run off by their shenanigans.
