They didn't talk as much, since it took a long time to upload a post at 300 baud and the mods got annoyed if you tied up a modem for too long. If I recall the server only had 3 modems. They were the good ones though, the USRs, I believe one of the early admins managed to overclock one to 1200 baud in a lab, but the phone lines could not handle it.
