I also like mp3PRO. The old mp3 standard may be getting a little long-in-the-tooth
MP3Pro is optimized for low bitrates. Good old mp3 gives better results if you can use bitrates > 128kbps.
With lame command line option --alt-preset cbr 192
Why? --alt-preset standard gives better results. Unless you NEED CBR files for some reason you can get higher quality from the same file size using VBR encoding.

For high quality stuff, ogg is probably the best way to go right now. a 96k or 128k ogg is very nice. Although I like ogg as a technology, I don't like the thought of dealing with two different encoders/decoders and also worrying about ogg compatability if I ever buy an mp3 player, so I'm leaving ogg alone for the time being.

OGG is very good at low bitrates. It whoops mp3's butt. But at high bitrate and transparent encoding, OGG still has to play catch up to the presets of lame. Sniff around hydrogen and the OGG coders for confirmation.
