What was your last near death experience

At a stoplight yesterday. Light turned green, so I eased on to the gas. I noticed in my periphery, a car speeding towards the intersection from the left. I slammed on my brakes and just barely dodged getting t-boned on the driver's side. I think the dude was texting becaused he looked up as he went through the intersection.

Phew! Life literally flashed before my eyes. Let's hear yours
 
I almost die at least once a week on the roads here. People are crazy. Self-driving cars can't come fast enough.

Last close call was a few days ago. Driving down the street on a 2-way suburban road. Oncoming car put on blinker to turn right onto a side street, truck behind him was impatient & decided to go around that car as it was turning & gunned it to zip past the car, neaaaaaaaarly hit me head on. I think we missed by three inches as the truck swerved back into his lane. I didn't even have time to honk. It was over so fast that I didn't even have time to feel scared from the adrenaline rush. Just a quick near-death experience & the thought registering afterwards of "wow, that was a close one, I could have died". And then I went on my merry way. All of that happened in seconds out of nowhere & could have ended in an awful head-on collision.

I see that way too often. The street in your story may not have had one, but I was always taught you NEVER cross the double yellow line, but people are so impatient. If you're behind a stopped car or bus or obstacle and have no choice but to cross it to get around them, then it's ok, but know that the oncoming lane has the right of way! It's not their lane that is blocked, it's yours! One car goes, and the rest of them just follow them into oncoming traffic like sheep without even looking to see if there's time for them to make it. Wait until it's clear before you drive down the wrong side of the road ya idiots!

Anyways, my last close call that I can remember I was on my way to work and a school bus decided to switch from the right lane to the left lane just as I started to pass it. I had to slam on my brakes to avoid getting shoved into oncoming traffic. As much as I try to avoid passing in the right lane, I moved into it, as I still wished to pass this knucklehead. Cautiously, I got my chance at the slight right curve up ahead, the damn bus comes into my lane while going around it and I had to come to a near complete stop to avoid going onto the sidewalk. I called the number on the back of the bus and reported them for nearly running me off the road twice in the span of about 300 feet.
 
I can't really recall a true one, but the riskiest thing I've done as of recent was ATV'ing on the rugged side of Aruba last week and going faster than I probably should have over some very rugged terrain. I kept having to stop and wait for my buddies behind me who were probably going at a more "correct" pace but what fun is that?
 
I'd say at least 2x a month I'm almost getting hit head on from idiots passing. My commute involves driving about 15 miles on a 2 lane highway and there's always semis and tractors driving down this route. What's worse is around this time of year, fog starts rolling in and people still try and pass smh.

Ah, my friend just got T-boned. Traffic got backed up & she got stuck in the middle of an intersection at a red light. Light turned green for cross traffic & a lady driving through wasn't paying attention and straight-up T-boned my friend's car. Technically it was my friend's fault for getting stuck in the middle of the intersection, but the other lady should have been looking ahead to see traffic conditions instead of literally driving head-on into someone who had been stopped since the light change.

All cars should come with a dashcam built in these days. And email capability, so you can just email the hit clip to insurance or the near-miss to the reporting # if it's a work vehicle.

I don't feel so bad about driving in America after seeing all of those Russian dashcam videos on Youtube tho...those guys are insane...
 
Ruptured spleen in a hockey game, blacked out in middle of quiet road while driving home. Woke to pissing myself and the car was somehow in park (miracle on both accounts). Driven to hospital after trying to sleep it off (thankfully couldn't), scan showed I was bleeding into my belly so emergency surgery. 20 years ago.

I bet the other car would be liable for majority of the damage. Your friend probably got a citation for blocking an intersection, but that doesn't mean the person who T-boned your friend can just not pay attention and get off scot-free.

Is it really? She took possession of the intersection when her light was green. Was your friend charged?
 
BTW, I'm surprised with so many 2-lane roads that are opposite directions of each other and no barrier that not more collisions/deaths happen head-on.

Most car crash videos on YT show left-turning-lane people drive right into oncoming traffic like they can't judge the other car's speed or don't bother to at all. My favorite channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC66qwfNetrcwvLVlb_RlMWA (because they're not all Russian).

I think I've had more arguments about this subject than any other subject in my life.

My viewpoint is that whether it is legal or not in your jurisdiction, you are still an idiot to be a sitting duck in the middle of an intersection. I simply do not do it. I wait back where it is clear and safe. Then, if there is an opening I go into the intersection. I get through as many intersections as anyone else does without missing lights. But, I wait for it it be guaranteed to be safe (as safe as driving can be given that it isn't an intrinsically safe task).

It may be legal to put your wallet down, full of thousands of dollars of cash, in a busy pedestrian mall. But it is exceedingly dumb to do so. In this case, it is just money. In the case of driving, your life is on the line and is out of your control, just so you can be temporarily stopped 10 feet closer to your destination.
 
^ I think it's fine to go out into the intersection to wait for an opening because you can still go when your turn light goes red. The only time you should not go out is if there is congestion on the street you're turning onto and you may actually get stuck. More cars make it through the turn this way overall compared to people waiting at the white line for their opening. I despise waiting more than 1 light iteration before getting through a turn. I wish more people were capable of everyday tasks such as this so they don't screw others over. In the end it may only make a couple minutes' difference but it's the same reason people casually speed... the alternative is too f'n slow for normal people. This ain't the boonies where everything is expected to be slow.
 
I think it was ~2000 or 2001 or so. 2 buddies and myself were almost plastered against a Jersey wall, while sitting there on I40 between Greensboro and Burlington late one evening. Driver came screaming around the corner in that left lane, swerved, and hit the wall a few feet past the last one of us, missing my legs by a couple of inches.

Why were we sitting there? Other dumbass friend of ours decided to fall asleep at the wheel of his dumbass camaro and plowed into the rear of a broken-down pickup truck that was stopped in the left lane. Guy was pushing it out of the way, and luckily he also avoided injury from that wreck. We were just chilling there, as Fire and Ambulance were doing their thing, when the drunky appeared. Drunky fled the scene but was roped up in the nearby woods the next morning.

QFT @dullard, this is what I'm thinking. I would not do it if I thought I'd get stuck. Our downtown is full of pitfalls like this. People just need to pay attention.

That's nuts, but not unexpected I guess. I got a ticket when I was like 18 for crashing into a guardrail after I fell asleep at the wheel, which I thought was BS.

What did the insurance companies do?

Haven't heard back from her, but she said the officer knew it was kind of a no-fault situation, but he was required to ticket somebody, so she drew the short straw for blocking traffic or whatever.
 
Today I ate a two day old Subway sandwich that I forgot to refrigerate while driving to work. A homeless jackass decided jaywalk across six lanes even though the crosswalk was nearby. I had to panic brake to avoid hitting him, so he stands there in traffic yelling at me for nearly hitting him. But because of what happened, my sandwich went flying onto my floor mat. I had to pick up a good amount that fell out of the bread. I still ate it all off the floor mat, so if I stop posting, now you know why.

IMO that is a both fault situation. Don't block the intersection and pay attention to driving. Not sure why he can't give out two tickets.

My last near death experience was probably saying something stupid to my wife.

I dunno, I am careful usually. Maybe driving in the mountains last year, if I messed up and went off the edge, it would be bad.
