I'd have to say when I built my core2quad server. All my stuff was previously hosted on an Athlon 3200+ (or close to that). When I loaded up all my VMs on the new box and did a compile of my game server I could not believe it. Went from 10 minutes to about 1 minute. No more waiting 9 minutes only to realize I missed a semi colon somewhere.

I was changing crystals on computers to get processors (then DIPS) to run faster.

my first real tricked out machine had these specs, before i had just bought pre built pcs

Core i7 920
GTX 470
6GB DDR3 1600
P6X58D-E
OCZ Vertex 2 60GB SSD
Samsung F3 1TB HDD
Corsair 750HX
CM 690 II Advanced

When I got my first real job while still in college I saved up and bought a top of the line "Quantex" computer with a P2-450, Voodoo 2 card and a monster 21" monitor. It was some rediculous cost...like $2800 or something. At the time the OEM price on the CPU alone was like $900. The Voodoo2 was like $350. Crazy.

Ehh, I really liked my Celeron 300A back in college .. I think late 98 or early 99...

But the only time I really spent big $$$ was this October.... got myself an I5 and a pair of 6870s and picked up another 2 cheap TN panels for eyefinity (already had 1) .... I'm really really liking it 🙂

Ah yes. You could take those up to 504mhz with a good fan.

My first Celeron was the 400mhz card style.
I remember having to pop it out, blow on the contacts, then re-insert it during LAN parties, just like an NES cartridge.

I ran 464 on a crappy heatsink with 2 little fans on it ... (set FSB to 100 and then my BH6 had some kinda turbo thing which bumped the FSB up to 103.)

I was able to boot, but it wasn't stable with 112mhz fsb ...

I eventually replaced that CPU with a celeron 533a on a slot-ket... and it ran rock solid at 896 mhz for quite a few years ...

My first tricked out machine was my 2006 rig. Had it for quite a while actually. Below is the end product in early 2009.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 +3800 2.0ghz
ASRock 939 Dual SATA2
2gb DDR
ATI Radeon HD 3850

Had a big arse Thermaltake Typhoon cooler, white cold cathode lighting, fan controller which independently controlled all system fans, blue LED power supply, and my Thermaltake Soprano case. The 939 Dual was a sweet mobo at the time. I broke one of the CC light tubes when building my current rig and never replaced them, so it doesn't light up anymore.
