for me it was the Unreal single player game. It really hit me when I saw steam and I could see the fish in the water. then I knew this was something different.
It must have been QuakeIII. I know this because I bought an SIII540 and couldn't get it going before Windows2000 in May- the demo.
Whoosh! Nice and simple, a modern pacman...
first one i loaded was the demo level of euro 2000. some flight sim that came with my monster 3d card. got the last one on the shelf as soon as it hit the store. i did nothing but play the same 2 levels for about 2 weeks. graphical bliss
Quake 1...I remember those days like it was yesterday. Going from software to openGL brought the game to a crawl, 10-20fpsmax, but it was all worth it when you've got transparent water on the abandoned base...(maybe someone can relate)
But I bought the Monter3d (4mg) when it first came out and was allready playing MotoRacer and stuff in glide so it was nothing new. When i bought my Viper v330 then I played quake1 opengl!
Altough my PC is still quite new (P3-550@733 + GF DDR, upgrade from P100) - the first "3D" thing I ran on it was Quake2 - only becouse it was the only 3d game I had at the time I turned it on for the first time - so that makes Q2 my "first" 3D Game (I played 3D games before.. but not on my own PC)/
