TRS-80 and my pop paid around $1000 for it. Not to mention the $1500 300 buad modem.

EDIT: that modem is still in my closet LOL.

Wow, I'm surprised no one ever thought of asking this question on AT before... :) Welcome here.

Anyway, my first was a 486sx-25 w/ 4 megs ram and a ~160meg hdd, 2x CD-rom, SB16, 1.44MB and 1.2MB 5.25" floppies. It was the cat's meow for $3500 or so at the time. Then teh dx chips became more mainstream and the value of this tanked.

EDIT: It had DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1.

Someimte in the early 80s my dad got a Radio Shack TRS-80 model II. No disk drive but it had a cassette recorder. Not sure how much it cost.
The irony is that that computer loads up faster than mine does now (P4 3.2, 2GB DDR2)

Technically the first was a commodore 64, but I really didn't use it that much.
The first one I really used was my Amiga 500, which I paid nothing for.

Gateway G6-350

Intel Pentium II 350Mhz processor with MMX
64MB of PC100 memory (later upgraded to 192MB)
10GB harddrive (Quantum Fireball)
3.5" Floppy Drive
4x DVD drive (8x CD)
17" monitor capable of 1280x1024 res.
ATI something 4MB graphics card with 12MB expansion card
Windows 98
Boston Acoustics 2.1 speaker system (which still happens to be in use) (Soyo Custom)
HP 840Cse? color inkjet printer. (I forget exactly what model)
HP 5960Cse? scanner (once again dont know the exact model)
28KB/sec modem :D

Whole thing cost around $3600. It was the king when released (I believe less than a month after Windows 98 was released) It would go on in history for me. Sites would say you would need a computer twice the speed of what I had. But after the memory upgrade, it chugged through everything i threw at it. I have both the Dell and Soyo, and the soyo cant play Commanche 4 above 1280x1024 all high and the Dell 1024x768 all high. But the Gateway went through like a pro at 800x600 all med. and water effects on high. I couldn't believe it. Also the same in reliability. I always have problems with these two computers but the Gateway was ALWAYS solid. I miss that computer. That thing was a MONSTER!

We had a Gateway P133 in Dec of '95 -- 16mb RAM, 17" monitor, CD, 3.5/5.25 combo (!), 1.6Gb HD and Win95. I think it cost about $4000. /My/ first system was a PII 450 that I built...can't recall how much I paid, but I did pay $110+ for 128mb generic PC133..

TI-99/4A for $50 in 1983. Followed by a Commodore 64. I didn't own a computer again until I blew 3 grand on a Dell P2 400 in '98.

My favorite computer still has to be the old Sony VAIO that I bought in 1997. It had PII 300, 64 MB of memory, 6 GB hard drive, an ATI AllInWonder card, and an awesome purple and grey case. That sucker was a rocket in it's day, especially after I added an extra 64 MB and a VooDoo 2 3D card.

The first machine I bought myself:

AMD 486DX2/80
8MB RAM
850MB HD
2MB Trident video (upgraded from 1MB standard, woohoo!)
15" AOC monitor

$800 in January 1996

No sound, speakers, or CD drive (I added those a few months later for $150)

Since then I have yet to build a completely new box for myself, all my upgrades have been piecemeal.

First was a C64 with the works: printer, 4 disk drives, tape drive, 1200 baud modem, fast load cart and a 1902A monitor. I have no idea how much it cost, probably not much.

First PC was christmas 1994: P120, 16 mb RAM, 1.2G hard drive, tape backup drive, 6x CD-ROM (which connected to the sound card rather than the mobo), cirrus logic VLB video card, HP DeskJet 660C printer and a 17" CRT monitor. OS was MS-DOS 6.22/Win 3.11. $5000

Footnote: the old laptop I'm using as a firewall is a great deal more powerful than that.

When Wing Commander came out, I upgraded to 2 megs of RAM (1meg cost $240) so that the hand on the joystick onscreen actually followed the users joystick !! Amazing ....
