I started late... Tandy 486DX/33 for around $1,200 (4MB RAM, 200ish MB hard drive space-450 with doublespace compression, hehe)
Afterwards, I put an DX4/100 overdrive in it. :)

Commodore C64 (The OLD version!) with cassette-deck and 1541 floppy-drive. I have no idea what it cost, but I got it brand new. Damn I miss that computer! After that I had couple of computers before I got a PC.

Before C64 I had Philips Videopak console, but that's no computer....

I started even later with an NEC P120 2mb onboard video, upgraded to a 2GB HD, 6xCD, etc.
With warranty and everything about $5,000 Cdn.

Commodore C64 w/ cassette player and a generic 1541 compatible disk drive. Boy those were the days, 500 games in one cassette. Beat that.

Hyundai (yes, the same corporation that manufactures cars) Intel 286/10
640k RAM
32Mb MFM Connor something-or-other HD w/ISA MFM controller
ATI EGA Xpression? w/256k video mem
Some 14" EGA monitor
Adlib sound board
2400baud modem
Logitech 2-button serial mouse (still have it, kind of flakey but workable)
1 5.25" HD, 1 5.25" DD drive
-------------------
$2100+tax, 1988 dollars

It was loaded at the time, evident with the spiffy EGA setup and a full 640K of RAM.

I don't recall how much were the rest.

The most significant cost was on my Viewsonic GT775 monitor, which I still have btw, and which is still doing kickass, despite all the flatscreen out there. I mean comparing quality wise. I never regretted paying $500 only to upgrade the monitor. (I bought my computer as a package 3 years ago)

IBM 386 was my first computer... I got it for free when the pentiums came out and my mom's friend didn't want it anymore. I remember playing Roger Wilco on that system!

Commodore 64...bought it used so it was cheap. Played with that thing for like 4 years before I made the MAJOR MASSIVE jump in late 1994 to a 486 dx/2 66MHz, 8MB RAM (the computer came with 4MB but we spent $250 upgrading it to 8MB), 850meg hard drive, 2x CD-Rom, Soundblaster 16 (best soundcard ever), floppy, etc....only cost a couple G's I think...Pentiums were starting to come out. got my first internet account on a 14.4 around the same time. wow, 7 years of my life wasted online ;)

wow.. you guys have young computers...

The first computer i used was one that my dad bought in the early 80s... it was called an Osborne. it had 2 5 1/4" drives that it booted from, and had the ultimate in graphic technology: a green monochrome screen that was about 5" across diagonally. It also weighed about 20 lbs.

as for cost.. i dont know.. and dont really want to find out!

Mucman, you got the years right. I actually have one sitting in my basement right now with a network card that's about a a foot and a half long. Thing has an amazing case(40LBS of steel!!!!).

Anyway my first computer to use would either be the Vic20 which I dont really count cause all we used it for was gaming. I'd more say the IBM XT was our families actual first computer. As for the first computer of my own... it was a P2 300 w/ 128megs ram I got about 4-5yrs ago maybe.

The first PC we had in the house was a Kaypro II a "luggable".

64k ram and 2 (count 'em) 2 5.25" floppy drives.

It ran CP/M.

The first PC that was mine was a Leading Edge 8088, 512K ram, 2 floppy drives.

Then moved to:

- Mac SE/30 replaced by...
- Compaq 486/66 (believe it or not this was a nice PC) replaced by...
- Compaq PII 333 (this Compaq was a POS) replaced by...

Current Systems...
- Home built Athlon OC'd to 800
- Home built PIII OC'd to 866

Ahhh the memories.....:)

No idea how much this cost, but the first computer I used was an XT
I believe those ran at 8MHz...it was very easy to type faster than the processor could keep up with. It didn't come with a hard drive, but we eventually upgraded it with a whopping 80MB drive.

The first computer I paid for was a P133 system that cost an arm and a leg, because it was top of the line at the time. It was like $2500

The first PC I purchased was a 486DX 33, 8 MB RAM, and a 120 MB HD system that cost around $1500.00 if I recall correctly.
