What was your electric usage in December?

Looks like my usage for December is 125 kWh according to DTE's website. 700 square foot apartment.

Well, looks like I "lied" Here's the actual breakdown.

Total: $56.99 (11/23-12/23)

--Electric: $40.99; 250 kWh @ $0.15293 + 7% users tax
Tier one usage (allowance: 263 kWh)

--Gas: $16.01; 3.096 therms @ $1.149
Tier one (14.32 therms allowed)

I probably turned the heat on for ~2 hours during that month. We don't really need it here. After the 23rd, we had a cold snap-meaning about 4-5 days of 40-30 F temps. Mom was in town, so I turned on the heat a few times, but not for very long.

We have a lot of solar pumped into the system around here, so rates have been dropping, I think. On top of that, we have random subsidies. Oct-Nov bill was $14 total, because of direct municipal payments into the system.

Holy moley. From what some of you are reporting it seems that I am buying some expensive electricity.

My prior comment wasn't directed at you. It was directed at others who used the same or more electricity as my family, but reported paying ~ $100 less.

Do you get electricity from one of the REMC/cooperatives too? That is one thing I miss about Duke (used to be Cinergy in this area) -- electricity was significantly cheaper.

Yea, Clark County REMC. Looks as though I'm paying $0.107/kWh effectively. Plus $31.50 monthly service fee and taxes. A lot of months my entire bill in CA was less than the REMC service fee 🙁.

I see Duke all over the place down here, but I guess they don't serve my subdivision.

No clue about BC Hydro, but last I checked, before they jacked up rates recently, price was based on time of use. Range was like $0.09/kWh to $0.12/kWh -- I just remembered the average to be around $0.10 to 0.11.

Make sure your heat pump water heater is set to only use the heat pump. By default most them "intelligently" revert to regular heat coils under high usage. I forced my GE to heat-pump only mode. Unfortunately, they are less efficient in the winter when they can't pump as much heat and when the air-conditioned air they create makes it harder to heat your home.

We are all-electric, wall heaters, 1400 sq-ft, lows in the high 20's. I added some R-30 above our vaulted ceiling and we started only heating the room we are in at the moment. We used 913 kW in December, down from ~1600 kW last year.

No idea. Electricity is so cheap here I never even look. Honestly my entire utility bill is pretty cheap so I never pay much attention.

$230 last month (so far the coldest month this winter season). That includes gas, electricity, water, sewer, garbage/recycle. 2400sqft

My tops is usually around $280 when it is bitterly cold the entire month, like this month so far. High today of -8, overnight lows in the -25 area.

Same here. I live in a large suburb of Indy where PSI Indiana (later Cinergy and then Duke) was headquartered, yet for some inexplicable reason, I am stuck on Hendricks County REMC. Grrrrrr

Thermostat set on 60°F entire time.

Used 2000 kWh and bill was a hair over $200...last year was 1500 kWh

It was a colder than usual December and my wife's 18 year old brother moved in with us and leaves the TV in his room on all night several times a week...and his Xbox..and his desktop...and...well you get the picture, teenagers don't give a shit when they don't pay the bills

I would be careful setting the thermostat too low with sub-freezing outdoor temps. If it's 55 on the inside of the walls and 20 outside, then within the walls will be a temperature gradient with some part below freezing. If that's a wall with water pipes you risk freezing.

If there are pipes in your outside walls, your builder was an idiot. The only thing in the wall is usually the vent stack, the pipes run into the kitchen or bathroom cabinets under the sink, which is inside of the external walls. Other wise it would freeze if you kept the house at 80 when it drops below zero outside.
