As well they should.
The park should have had more fencing to keep people out and signs warning of the dangers of bears.

Too bad the parents werent bitten instead. Parent bitten+rabid bear=Natural Selection FTW.

btw, the fencing was 8 friggin feet tall and there was another fence the kid put his hand in after the first fance to touch the bear. 8 feet is a lot of height. The parent watched as the child slipped his habd theough the 2nd fence to try to touch the bear as well as helped the child get across the first 8 foot fence! When you see a 8 foto fence it means we are protecting you from something people dont just put up 8 foot fences for no reason. Chain link more than 6 feet tall is rare and usually 8 foot is for military bases and prisons.

8 feet was obviously not high enough. Someone who really wanted to get to those bears still got to them.
Also, there should have been signs warning of the dangers of bears.

why? the signs would have done nothing. the parents let the kid try to touch the bears. 8 feet is incredibly high fro chain link. What do you want electrified 40ft fences like in jurassic park?

The bear did not charge him, the child poked his arms through a 2nd set of fences to try to touch the bear.

If that will protect people, yes.

We actually have to tell people that bears are dangerous? And make fences even taller because people are idiots?

WTF?!

Until reading this article, I never knew that bears were actually dangerous. 😉

I agree, wtf is supposed to be there, razorwire and snipers?

Its not a friggin prison, its a zoo.

At least darwin can still strike the dumbest of the dumb. Evolution has slowed though because there are too many warnings. The stupid ones arent food anymore, only the truly "unfit to be alive" crowd.

i just went to the park where this happened today. it is a great park and a shame what happened to the bears. I think they are going to try and get some replacements. people are such idiots, what kind of parent lets a 4 year old get that close to a bear?

In this case there WASN'T a tall fence and razor wire, and the parent and child lived, but the bears died.

Better yet, teach the parents a lesson and present them with the bill for repairing the fence, putting down the two innocent animals, lab fees associated with rabies analysis and all other medical bills involved (i.e. automatic denial of any medical insurance claims). Tack onto that replacement cost for obtaining two more bears and the cost of additional safety equipment (i.e. warning signs every 5 feet and a second layer of fencing). At that point, even if their wages aren't being garnished, the parents will learn to never, ever do anything that stupid again.

EDIT: Of course, we need the media to heavily publicize the final dollar figure of the parents' financial responsibility and make it clear that this could happen to anyone who does anything this mindless. Of course, the media would probably never do this and/or people dumb enough to do this would never be paying enough attention to hear about it anyways. *sigh* Such is the society we live in.

EDIT2: Or on a milder note, the park personnel could put up a memorial plaque for the two bears describing the events that took place and why they were euthanized, and pictures of the family involved. Anyone who comes by to see any new bears would then see such a plaque and it would serve as a warning, a memorial to two much loved bears, and a persistent embarrassing reminder of people's stupidity. Oh, as in the previous edit, charge the family for the cost of said plaque.

I like the way you think.

So you think those rediculous measures are neccesary?

2 fences, one over 8 feet tall, isnt enough?

It's unfortunate that this society has become so litgious that people would actually suggest the PARENT suing in this situation.

Our legal establishment needs to decrease the level of liability pinned on corporations/insitutions (in this case the zoo) with regard to negligence.

A warning sign at the park entrance and fences keeping the ANIMALS from getting out are more than enough.

There's so many idiots out there, it's too bad these bears couldn't cull the herd a little bit.
