in high school, my dad bought a 70's Datsun 510 station wagon for me to drive, he paid $275 for it

on my own, in 1987 i bought a 1984 Chevy Citation for about $3500

that doesn't count motorcycles, but you said car so i guess that is ok

Free to me. 1988 Honda Accord LX-i. Parents bought it for themselves in 1990. Handed it down to me with 162,000 miles in 1998 (145,000 miles of those were my parents'). I drove it until 2003 when we sold it with 217,000 miles on it (still ran perfectly, but was rusting out). They got $1,500 for it, the same as what the dealer offered them in 1998 to trade it in on mom's new Maxima SE.

The first car I bought myself was a 1976 Porsche 914 2.0. $3,500. Unsecured bank loan. Paid off in 2004. (3 years.) Traded with my 924S in late 2004 in an even trade for my '89 944.
