Why can't you yanks nominate people like the author of that piece for presidential candidates ? (Having Kennedy as your last name should be more then enough PR to make such an attempt viable, I'd think).
They did once and we saw what happened to two of them.

In my view, the system has to crash for any real reform to happen. Unfortunately, there are no easy paths anymore for painless improvement.

Ever since I first read this, I'm continually reminded of it when observing world affairs.
