Tonight's meal was driven by tradition. It's the same dinner meal my wife and I have had for 25 years on Jan. 1 - Ham steak, hoppin' john, and steamed cabbage.

Thankfully now I don't have to eat that crap for another year.

Well, tonight I had some hanger steaks that probably didn't have 24 more hours in the fridge. So I cut into medallions, marinated in some wine, soy sauce, sesame oil and vinegar. So far, so good, right? Well, then I realized I had some general tso's sauce leftover. So I decided to dredge in cornstarch and fry. Let that be a lesson to all of you. Don't deep fry beef, no matter what you happen to be craving at the moment.

Actually, it tasted pretty good. But it wasn't worth the effort of setting up a fry station.

LOL. Lesson learned. My wife learned the same lesson a while back when we went to a Fleming's steakhouse. I ordered a nice ribeye and asparagus. She ordered a monte cristo style t-bone. I enjoyed every bite of mine . . . she barely touched hers.

A nice brown ale that is fermenting in my closet :)

That said, my apartment still smells atrocious from it.

great soup last night

last week, I decided to take advantage of fresh summer vegetables and made a corn and bean salad (with tomatoes and chipotle chiles in adobo sauce)... still had some leftover this weekend, so I decided to throw it in a pot with some vegetable broth and grilled chorizo. seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic, and a dash of cayenne pepper because the vegetable broth diluted the heat level.

Fried up some Spanish mackerel we caught today.

Going to smoke some mullet tonight that I caught in the net. Probably make some fish dip.
