After replaying HL2, I've realized that I'm out of FPS games. Totally tapped. i've got nothing at all. I'm looking to purchase something, but then I realize that unless I've missed a game, there aren't any good, solid, "pure" FPS games with a decent offline component.

Anyone have any suggestions?

XIII and before that I would say the Original Medal of Honor on the Playstation 1 followed by Medal of Honor Allied Assault.

hmmm... well i played Q4, pretty good single player. also played Deus Ex, god of all single player FPS's. also play soldier of fortune II, it still has a great online community (best FPS MP since Quake1, i say). COD2 was good, but got a bit repetitive after a while IMO.

Well I just finished No One Lives Forever 2 this afternoon. I think that makes it my 4th time through.

Also by the same company is Aliens Vs. Predator 2. A great game all around. Just the right balance of action, suspense and story to make a good experience.

Medal Of Honor: Pacific Assault is pretty good once you get through the long intro and Boot Camp stage.

I tried the Prey demo and just couldnt find that much interest. Maybe I'm getting tired of video games too. Theres a couple of titles I'm looking forward to this year and if they dont deliver, I'll probably quit gaming for a while.

I'm a DM and I need to finish a grand campaign I've been working on for 4 years.

FEAR is great, get it if you haven't played it. Not for the weak hearted though, it's very scary.

For the first 5 minutes, until you get used to the pattern of go somewhere -> random enemies appear -> cutscene -> same again etc etc... Half Life was scarier than FEAR ended up being, because it was unexpected and different.
FEAR you expect it and it's always the same thing.

I liked FEAR a lot. I just finished Condemned which I thought was really good until the end. Still a good game to play.

I'm kind of in the same boat, I've played most of the newer games and now it seems like there's nothing left to try. I guess I could go back to some older titles.

I never finished COD2 and I never played COD1 plus the add-on. I've never played BF2. May have to try that.

I've already played Oblivion for 100 hours, I'll probably go back to this as new add-ons are released.

Counterstrike Source. Still playing.

Before that, FarCry. Didn't like it much though and uninstalled after a few levels.

Before that, Halo PC. Sucky, but I lived with it for a long time.

If you mean single-player, I'd say Half-life 2. I haven't bought Ep1 and probably wont until it gets cheap just because they never added anything multiplayer to it. But HL2 is my favorite singleplayer game in a long time.

I didnt get into FEAR much at all. I'm not sure if it was the repetition or what but it just didnt do it for me in spite of having excellent gun battles, graphics, AI, etc

FarCry just didnt do much for me either but I guess I didnt give it much of a chance.

I didnt like the Prey demo really so I'm gonna skip that one.

As far as multiplayer, I think BF2 is my favorite right now. I really like DoD:S and CS:S just haven't gotten to play them much. I still play Joint Ops if Kutu Arms Market is ever being played (load up JO, check for Kutu Arms, if then join else quit and load BF2 :))

I remember NOLF2 a while ago and it seemed like an excellent singleplayer game. Perhaps I should check that out. Also if one guy says SOF2 MP is his best FPS MP since Quake 1, well damn I must've been missing out!! I dont know if its just because I've gotten older or what but I just dont play games (SP or MP) like I used to with Quake and games of that time.

Of course I got a lot of games in other genres that I have neglected so its not like I should go out looking for more FPS games. I guess I could check out a few of the older ones since they are cheap, then finish up everything I got right now so that I'll be ready for future games like: UT2k7, Quake Wars (this will probably be my favorite), Hellgate, Savage 2 !!!!, hell theres tons more too.

edit: I've also been thinking about trying out Tribes 1 and 2 again. Tribes 1 was a ton of fun with the Shifter mod. Tribes 2 disappointed many but I played it a lot with Shifter as well. I see there is still a couple hundred Tribes 2 players playing, but Tribes 1 seems to have dropped off Gamespy's list. So I'm not sure if its worth getting them again if theres few players. Then again there is hardly any Savage players but all I need is EvilMonkey's 64player server.

SP - Call of Duty 2.
MP - Soldier of Fortune 2 - i have not found a fps game with MP as good as SoF2's. nothing else comes close except for maybe CoD2 but not stock CoD2. there is a certain mod out there that make the stock game 10x better.

i don't know how anyone can think FEAR was good. it had good graphics but the gameplay was boring and everything looked the same.

SOF2 FTW!:D

oh, by the way OP, you can pick up SOF II for like... ~$5-10 shipped

the single player is great, as well as the MP. just one piece of advice though (should you buy it) - don't play single player on "soldier of fortune" skill level... it's a bad bad bad idea :D:D

CoD:UO. It was CoD tweaked just so.

I agree about SoF2. Best freebie (came with my sound card) I've ever gotten. Loved that game. Stopped playing it when my fav servers went to CoD.

Is CoD2 worth playing? I bought it. Played it. Hated the MP. Went back to BF2. Any patches help gameplay?

Despite the fact I still play a lot of BF2 I can't recommend it. I just don't have any games I like better.

Ah, for the days of the original UT.

cod2 has great single player.
as i said, the stock mp isn't all that great. moves too slow for me but the server i play on occasionally has this mod that makes it 10x better. still doesn't beat SoF2 mp though.

Story Driven:

HL2 & EP1: Good single player action. The graphics aren't off the chart, but the gameplay is fun. Both can be found for cheap if you look hard.

Quake 4: (Currently a sale bin item!) Way better than Doom3. The difficulty levels really change the way the games plays (i.e. it actually gets incrementally harder).

FEAR: neat graphics, but the story gets weak and there are a lot of repetitive environments (i.e. office space, more office space).

Prey: The full game is good. The gravity/portals really change the gameplay aspect (fighting with people on the ceiling/walls). It has a lot of the old 3drealms humour in it (casino games everywhere). May want to wait for prices to drop before you buy.

GRAW (Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter): Not for everyone, but a different type of SP environment. You really need to think when you play, you can't just run and gun through the whole map as you usually get smoked. Like Counterstrike all guns are lethal, making it more realistic. You can probably find it in a used bin at a EB.

Free for all:

CS: Source Bot Matches: Fun instant fighting situations. The bots get predictable at times, but it is a good waste of time. Difficulty levels effect bot strategy and accuracy. Just a tip, if you find that bots are snipng all the time (it happens) take away the sniper rifles in the bot menu. I've had a few knife only matches, and it gets crazy.

BF2 (plus mods). There are a few free mods out there to expand BF2 SP beyond the 16 player maps. Like CS: Source it is an instant action type of gameplay, and a chance to hone your skills if you are into MP matches. You can try to "command" (squad leader or commander) the bots, but they don't listen very well (like human BF2 players who don't understand tactics). Unlike human players, the bots don't use the exploits to win (i.e. Blackhawk whoring, spawn camping, map exploits, etc...)

last "good" - really good - FPS was Chronicles of Riddick:EfBB . . . :p
FEAR sucked - except for Enemy AI and Particle effects . . . HL2 Ep1 was really dumb . . . worse than HL2 . . . Source Engine should be retired [shadows are awful] . . . D3 was the worst game i finished . . . FC has a stupid story and irritating voice acting that ruined immersion . . . D3 was beyond dull - an engine's showcase.

i am tired of paying $40+ for 10 good hours of *content* :|

it's SO BAD i changed to hybred games . . . i am loving Oblivion . . .although it is RPG, it has realtime FPS-style fighting . . . and i have hundreds of hours into it.
:Q

i was gonna UNinstall it after i *Maxed Everything* . . . then i discovered the PC code to bacome a Vampire - again! . . . and i decided to bring a big party with me [even the Adoring Fan] so the game is very different now .. .
[plus i can cast "chained acrobatics fortify spells" that get my Char beyond the cells and 'walls' of the game . . . and the mods looks good]
it is the best $50 i ever spent on a PC game

The shadows in Source arent that bad, but they arent they greatest. Other than that, I agree with you on Oblivion :p

Another vote for Riddick here, that was one of the very few FPSs of modern times that genuinely impressed me. The only problem with it is that it's quite short, although it's worth playing more than once. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, although not technically an FPS, is another outstanding game.

As for MP, nothing has really held my attention during the last few years. I used to be a hardcore UT (original) player at one time and now find all the modern MP games too slow paced for my liking. If 2k7 goes back to the old UT gameplay again, that could be my next big game though.

I have mostly been just replaying various older games during the last few months, stuff like the Deus Ex games, Freespace 2, System Shock 2 and a few others, and I'll probably continue to do that until Crysis, UT2007 or SCDA comes out.
