The first version of Windows I ever used was Windows 3.1. It came with my dad's Packard Bell 486SX 25Mhz with 8mb ram that he bought in 1993 and it looked like this:

I'm curious if the younger generation has ever even seen Win 3.x.

Windows 95 for me. I used the computer in 2000 though, so it was 4-5 years old at the time.

95. We didn't get a home computer until about 1996. We didn't ever switch to Windows 98, I think - just went straight to XP.

I used 3.x but most of the time was in DOS.

I have a copy (5 1/4 floppy legit :) ) of Win 1.0 somewhere here. Came with an old AT&T (8086/186?)

3.1. I still have it, and it still works in my 486DX, which was my first x86 pc. I never used it though. Too bloated. I preferred DOS :^D

How'd you swing that? We got our Gateway in '92 and it was a whopping 90 MHz, I didn't realize you could get 25 in '93?

We had 3.11 (Workgroups).

3.1 here too. Don't remember a whole lot of it besides playing some random games on it as a kid.

Pentium 90? I think my dad got a pretty good deal on the 486. I think Pentiums at the time were a fortune. He may have bought it at the end of 92 I can't remember. Either way it was way better than the 286 we had before it.

edit: Just looked it up. The pentium didn't come out until 93.

I used DOS most of the time too since none of my games worked with windows running.

Your dads machine was better than mine, I had a Packard Bell 486/25 with 2MB RAM running Windows 3.1. When the motherboard fried it was replaced under warranty by a service tech that made a free house call. The new MB was a 486/33 and had 4MB of RAM, in those days that was considered to be a great upgrade. Getting it for free was a big deal.

Yes, the Pentium didn't come out until 93 and even then, only in 60 and 66 Mhz versions IIRC. The next tick was the release of 75, 90, and 100 Mhz models IIRC and that was in 94 with 120 Mhz and 133 Mhz following in 95. I remember, because my first PC build was in 95 with the all new Pentium 120 that I paid close to $1000 for.

As far as the 486 goes, there were 486 DX4 CPUs up to 100 Mhz (and I think AMD or someone made a 120 Mhz and/or 133 Mhz version as well), but it was very common in the early 90s to get 486 SX CPUs in the 20 to 33 Mhz range. My brother got a 25 Mhz model in 92.

My first version of Windows was one of the 3.x variations. Prior to that, I was Commodore only (Vic 20 through Amiga).

I tried Windows 1.0 (checked it out from the university library). Sucked ass. A want-to-be "Desqview" (task switcher for DOS) clone. Windows 3.0 was miles ahead and 3.1 better still. I tried OS2 from IBM but it never caught on. Not very stable either.

Started out with TRS-DOS and then IBM-DOS/MS-DOS. I tried DR-DOS too but don't remember too much about it. Don't remember what the Radio Shack Color Computer (CoCo) had on it now....too long ago.

1st PC (8088/8086 based was a 7.16MHz Tandy 8088 processor, 384KB ram, Tandy 16 color color graphics and 2 - 720KB 3.5" floppy drives. $1607 including dot matrix printer (1987). Added 20MB Seagate MFM drive for $389 during the spring of 1988. That's the system that I tried Windows 1.0 on.

When I was about 8 (1993) we got a computer. 486 with Windows 3.1.

For some reason, I think it booted to DOS. And we didn't know about the "win" command. So like I remember having to install games everytime I wanted to play them. When we finally got to Windows and in the file manager, there was like 12 installation directories of the same game. :)

3.1 but mostly used MSDOS then. I remember paying over 200 bucks for like 2MB of ram. Gaming was so challenging back then :p
