I don't remember the first mp3 I downloaded, but it was from alt.binaries.sounds.music, and it was probably a hard rock song.
I remember the first ones I encoded more clearly. They're here:
http://www.iocon.com/das/sounds_m.shtml
The Star Wars clips culled from VHS tape, encoded using l3enc and uploaded on Aug 7, 1996, were the among the first I ever encoded. I had a 486 back then and used Fraunhofer's Winplay 1.40 to play the files. Anything over 64 kbit/s put too much of a strain on the CPU when playing back, and sounded choppy.
I had been using .mp2 files before then (using Xing mplay, or something like that). When I started my site, there were perhaps a half-dozen other sites I could find to link to. It exploded quickly, obviously.
BTW, I'm not the owner of the site. I gave the site away to the current owner after I got tired of answering email.
My new site provides me with more entertainment, and email is no longer a problem!
