Matrix or Lost in Space. One or the other. Got them both at the same time I got the DVD player, I think.

no clue

maybe a disney movie of the kids, i remember we bought a couple of them before we bought our first player

but i might have had a DVD in a work laptop before that, i don't know

You guys are weak. 🙂

I actually bought ~10 of the first 20 or so DVDs available - they only came out in a few markets so had to have a friend pick them up for me from the DC area. Of course they weren't nearly as cool as laserdiscs, but still seemed worth the investment.

Be thankful they caught on - the opposing camp would have had you paying every time you watched your movie....

Edit: I think batman and the mask may have been among the very first DVDs released?

Ransom (mel gibson)

summer of 99 on my HP Pavilion, 500mhz P3 which I just had bought and thought was the coolest thing with its dvd player.

My bro got me a Monty Python DVD so I "had" to get a DVD drive to watch it. 😀 First DVD I bought for myself? The Matrix, of course.

Ah, yes... Divx! I remember that. Could Divx players play DVDs too? If not, sucks for people who invested in that technology.

I remember the days of most movies not being available on DVD... and rental stores only having a few scattered amongst shelf after shelf of VHS. I remember some early DVDs (before DVD-9 and DVD-18) being Flippers (meaning you had to turn the DVD over at some point during the movie--Amadeus was like that.

Agh and movies being released in P&S only (when are they going to re-do Happy Gilmore in widescreen? I mean for such a classic re-watchable film I can't believe there hasn't been an SE or at least an OAR released).

Any old timers remember the Winter 1998 800.com promo? 3 DVDs for $1.00--shipped! That's how I started my DVD library.
